The All-Star game is still a month away, but the season is already getting late for the promising but struggling San Diego Padres. After falling below .500 with another close loss, the Padres conclude their brief two-game set against the host San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

San Diego began this week's six-game road trip against San Francisco and Colorado on a down note Tuesday when the Giants rallied for a 6-5 victory on Evan Longoria's two-run double in the seventh inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered on the first pitch of the game for the Padres, who fell to 33-34, 12 games out of first in the National League West and 4 1/2 games out of a wild card spot. "This is a big road trip for us," manager Andy Green told reporters before Tuesday's contest. "We've got six games against divisional opponents and an opportunity to make up some ground against, especially, the Rockies and teams in front of us." San Francisco is 12-20 at home but received a boost in Tuesday's win from closer Will Smith, who pitched a perfect ninth inning and has converted all 15 of his save opportunities.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Joey Lucchesi (5-3, 4.21 ERA) vs. Giants RH Shaun Anderson (1-1, 4.18)

Lucchesi finished the month of May with a 2.97 ERA and 28-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 1/3 innings but allowed four runs over five innings against Washington on Thursday. The 26-year-old native Californian owns a 3.11 ERA in eight home starts this season compared to a 6.75 mark in four outings away from Petco Park. Lucchesi is 2-1 with a 4.87 ERA in four career starts versus San Francisco - including 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two outings this season.

Anderson bolstered his case to stick in the Giants' rotation with another solid start Thursday, allowing three runs in six innings in a no-decision against the New York Mets. "He did a terrific job," manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. "He had great poise out there. He pitched out of a jam and settled down. He gave us a chance to win." The 24-year-old native of Florida owns a 16-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his first five starts covering 28 innings.

1. San Francisco C Buster Posey (hamstring) is expected to be activated off the 10-day injured list prior to Wednesday's game.

2. San Diego 1B Eric Hosmer has reached base safely in a season-high 17 straight games.

3. Giants 1B Brandon Belt (stomach illness, sore neck) has missed the last two games and is listed as day-to-day.
