Golden State should win, by about eight, and the price asks for 12.5. Take the Fire +12.5.
Golden State is a 12.5-point favourite in Portland on Tuesday, -12.5 at -115 at DraftKings, read at 23:04 UTC on 21 September, the number it opened at. When this page first went up that afternoon there was no line, and it said Golden State was a bet at -7 or shorter. At -12.5 the same number points the other way.
The number
My figure compares like with like. Golden State has a winning record, so I take Portland’s home games against winning teams. Portland has a losing record, so I take Golden State’s road games against losing teams. Half the difference between the two average margins is the number.
Portland is 3-9 in those twelve home games and loses them by 7.2 points on average. Golden State is 7-2 in its nine road games against losing teams and wins them by 9.0. Half the difference is Golden State by 8.1.
I play a side when my number and the price are at least a point apart. Golden State by 8.1 against a line of 12.5 is a gap of 4.4 points, on Portland, the widest gap on this week’s priced games so far.
How often 12.5 gets covered
The same two samples, counted against this line. Golden State won by more than 12.5 in three of its nine road games against losing teams. Portland lost by more than 12.5 in five of its twelve home games against winning teams, so it stayed inside the number in seven.
The moneyline, Golden State -800 and Portland +550, prices the Valkyries to win 85.2% of the time once the bookmaker’s margin is out. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Golden State 85.3%. Nobody, this piece included, expects Portland to win. The bet is on the margin.
The case against: the three meetings
This is what argues hardest against the pick, and it is strong. Golden State won 95-77 at home on 2 June, 86-69 in Portland on 30 August and 82-66 at home on 18 September. Margins of 18, 17 and 16: all three would have covered 12.5.
Three games against one opponent, two of them at Golden State’s home, are a smaller sample than the twenty-one behind my number, and that is why I stay with the number. A reader who weighs the head-to-head more heavily should pass rather than take Golden State.
Golden State wins by defending
The Valkyries are 31-11, a game behind Minnesota for the best record in the league, and allow 74.8 points a game. They score 82.3. That is a 7.5-point margin built on the lowest-scoring games of any team in this week’s slate: a median total of 162.
They have won six in a row and eight of the last ten, by 11.8 a game. The last two were 82-66 over Portland on Friday and 70-57 over Seattle on Saturday, both at home.
Portland, and the rest
Portland is 16-27 and has lost four straight, the last a 105-84 defeat in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Fire lose by 3.8 a game at home.
Golden State last played on Saturday and has had two days off; Portland played on Sunday and has had one. That small edge points toward Golden State.
The total
The total is 157.5, where it opened, over -105 and under -115. Golden State’s games have a median total of 162 and Portland’s 179. Over the last ten, the Valkyries’ games have averaged 146.4 and the Fire’s 174.0.
The two teams disagree by 17 points on the median and by nearly 28 on the recent average, and the line sits near the Golden State end of both. No bet.
Pick: Fire +12.5
Pick: Portland Fire +12.5 at -105, DraftKings, read 21 September 2026 at 23:04 UTC. My number is Golden State by 8.1.
What would change it: at Portland +9 or less, the gap falls under a point and I pass. So does any news that changes who plays for either team in the last week of the regular season.
