Our number has Texas Tech by 25.6, and the line is 34.5. Take Sam Houston +34.5.
DraftKings has Texas Tech -34.5. Our number has Texas Tech winning by 25.6. That is an 8.9-point gap, and we bet at 3.
How the number is built
Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only (the top division of college football), across 2025 and 2026. A side is a bet when that number and the spread are at least 3 points apart. Anything closer is a pass.
Texas Tech is 7-0 at home against FBS teams over those two seasons, winning by 29.9 points a game. Six of the seven are from 2025. The only 2026 game is a 28-26 win over Houston on 18 September.
Sam Houston is 1-7 on the road against FBS teams over the same span, losing by 21.2 a game. Seven of the eight games are from 2025. The win was 21-17 at Oregon State on 8 November 2025, and the 2026 game was a 24-21 loss at Troy.
Half the difference between +29.9 and -21.2 is 25.6 points, in Texas Tech’s favour. The 2026 part of that is two games out of fifteen. It proves nothing about this season on its own.
Where the price has gone
DraftKings opened Texas Tech at -37.5. At 08:59 UTC on 23 September it was -34.5, with Texas Tech at -108 and Sam Houston at -112.
The line has moved 3 points toward Sam Houston. DraftKings posts no moneyline on this game, so there is no win price to read. ESPN’s FPI gives Texas Tech a 96.6% chance to win, and our number agrees on the winner. It disagrees on the margin, by 8.9 points.
What the results say
Texas Tech is 3-0 and No. 11 in the AP poll. It beat Abilene Christian 33-10 at home, which is not an FBS team, won 35-24 at Oregon State, and beat Houston 28-26 at home.
That last result is the newest part of the home sample, and the smallest. Texas Tech’s six 2025 home wins over FBS teams came by 48, 31, 25, 42, 22 and 39 points. Its one 2026 home game against an FBS team was won by 2.
Sam Houston is 1-2. The win was 59-0 over Nicholls, which is not an FBS team. The losses were by 3 at Troy and by 6 at home to Tulsa. Against FBS teams in 2026 it has been outscored 23.5 to 19.0 a game.
2025 is where the size of the gap comes from. Texas Tech went 12-2 and outscored opponents by 27.6 a game. Sam Houston went 2-10 and was outscored by 20.1 a game.
The spread asks one question: does Texas Tech win by 35 or more? In its seven home games against FBS teams, it has done that three times, by 48, 42 and 39. In its eight road games against FBS teams, Sam Houston has lost by 35 or more twice, 55-0 at Texas and 55-14 at Louisiana Tech. Each of those is fewer than half the games in its sample.
Pick: Sam Houston +34.5
Our number is Texas Tech by 25.6. The line is 34.5. The gap is 8.9 points against a threshold of 3, so Sam Houston +34.5 is the bet.
This is a bet on the margin. Our number still has Texas Tech winning the game by 25.6 points.
What changes it
The line. The bet holds while Texas Tech is -29 or more. At -28.5 it is a pass. The market has already moved 3 points this way since the open.
Availability can move it too. Check the injury report before you bet: nothing on this page says who is available.
The call on 16 September
The first version of this page went up on 16 September, before any line was posted. Its headline read: “Sam Houston is 0-2 and Texas Tech is ranked 13th. I’m on the Red Raiders.” Its pick read: “Pick: Texas Tech to win (no line posted yet)”. Its condition read: “Price discipline: none yet. The value in this game will be the spread, and I will set it once there is one.”
The spread is now posted at 34.5, and by that page’s own terms the spread decides the bet. It points to Sam Houston. So the call has moved, from Texas Tech to win with no price to Sam Houston +34.5. Our number still has Texas Tech winning, and DraftKings has no moneyline to bet that at.
The first version said it would look again if Texas Tech lost to Houston. Texas Tech won 28-26.
The total
The total opened at 54.5 and is 55.5 now, over -108 and under -112.
Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, 6 of Texas Tech’s 15 games went over 55.5, and 6 of Sam Houston’s 14 did. The medians are 49 and 53.5 points.
This season agrees. Of the four FBS games these teams have played in 2026, one went over, the 59-point game at Oregon State. That is a lean to the under, and a lean is not a bet.
