College Football Week Zero Results for 2026 are complete after eight FBS games opened the season on August 29. North Carolina stunned TCU 15-10 in Dublin, Virginia routed NC State 34-8, North Dakota State dominated its FBS debut and Memphis closed the night with a 27-21 upset at UNLV.

College Football Week Zero Scores and Betting Results

Week Zero produced six winning unders and only two overs. The two overs came in USC-San Jose State and Stanford-Hawai’i, while every other game remained below the total published in the ScoresAndStats preview.

Six of the eight favorites won outright, but only four covered the published spread. That distinction is important because USC and Florida State both won comfortably without coming close to covering their enormous numbers.

Memphis +4.5 Was the Best Result

Memphis did more than cover the four-and-a-half points. The Tigers won outright in Las Vegas and turned the original underdog recommendation into one of only two Week Zero moneyline upsets.

The original handicap focused on Memphis being capable of challenging UNLV’s rushing defense. Memphis finished with 195 rushing yards and ultimately controlled the fourth quarter enough to turn a 21-7 second-quarter deficit into a six-point victory.

The result is also a good example of why taking points with a live underdog can be preferable to immediately betting the moneyline. The +4.5 ticket remained protected even if Memphis had lost a close game, while still cashing when the Tigers won outright.

North Carolina-TCU Under 46.5 Won Easily

The North Carolina-TCU under was the cleanest total result of the slate. The teams scored 20 points in the opening quarter and only five over the final three periods.

North Carolina held TCU scoreless for the final 49 minutes and limited the Horned Frogs to 281 total yards. TCU also committed 11 penalties and converted only one of five fourth-down attempts.

The final score of 15-10 landed 21.5 points below the published total. It was the lowest-scoring FBS game of Week Zero.

Eastern Michigan -9.5 Covered by 1.5 Points

Eastern Michigan required nearly the full spread but delivered an 11-point victory against FBS newcomer Sacramento State.

Noah Kim threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Eastern Michigan built a 21-10 halftime lead and matched Sacramento State touchdown for touchdown in the fourth quarter to preserve the cover.

The 28-17 victory also became the 500th win in Eastern Michigan program history.

NC State +4.5 Was the Clear Miss

NC State +4.5 never developed into the competitive ACC game projected before kickoff. Virginia scored the first 24 points and eventually won 34-8.

The original case for NC State depended on quarterback continuity and the possibility of a one-possession game. Instead, Virginia controlled the matchup and showed that its home-field advantage and defensive structure had been undervalued.

It was the only loss on the four-pick primary card and the largest miss among those highlighted selections.

All Eight Week Zero Picks Graded

The full game-by-game prediction slate finished 4-4. The total selections split 2-1, while the five side selections finished 2-3.

The 4-4 overall record also shows why separating a best-bets card from every game prediction matters. Not every matchup carries the same edge, and the three winning selections from the 3-1 primary card were all supported by stronger price or matchup arguments than several of the secondary plays.

North Carolina vs. TCU Result: Tar Heels Win 15-10

North Carolina produced the largest outright betting upset of Week Zero by beating TCU 15-10 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The game initially looked more offensive than the final score suggests. The teams were tied 10-10 after the first quarter, but TCU did not score again.

North Carolina’s defense held the Horned Frogs below 300 total yards and repeatedly stopped drives when TCU attempted to extend possessions. The Horned Frogs finished 1-for-5 on fourth down and committed 11 penalties.

The betting impact was significant. TCU entered the ScoresAndStats preview as an 8.5-point favorite and lost outright. The under 46.5 was the original recommendation and cashed comfortably with only 25 combined points.

San Jose State vs. USC Result: Trojans Win 42-26

No. 14 USC won its opener 42-26 but failed to cover the enormous 38.5-point spread.

The Trojans appeared positioned for a much larger margin after leading 28-0 at halftime and 35-3 during the second half. San Jose State then scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, turning a potential blowout cover into an easy underdog ticket.

Jayden Maiava threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns while also scoring on the ground. Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown in an impressive USC debut.

The late San Jose State scoring also pushed the game over 60.5. This result illustrated exactly why laying more than five touchdowns creates substantial backdoor risk even when the favorite controls most of the game.

NC State vs. Virginia Result: Cavaliers Roll 34-8

Virginia delivered one of Week Zero’s most decisive performances with a 34-8 victory over NC State at Scott Stadium.

The Cavaliers scored the first 24 points and prevented NC State from scoring on its first eight possessions. The matchup never developed into the one-score ACC game expected by the original handicap.

Virginia covered -4.5 with more than three touchdowns to spare, while the 42 combined points stayed below the 51.5 total.

The result immediately strengthens Virginia’s early ACC profile. It also provides a warning against placing too much weight on returning-quarterback continuity when the opposing team owns clear advantages elsewhere.

Jacksonville State vs. North Dakota State Result: Bison Win 33-7

North Dakota State’s first game as an FBS program ended with a dominant 33-7 victory over Jacksonville State.

Jacksonville State scored its only touchdown in the first quarter. North Dakota State then shut out the Gamecocks over the final three periods and steadily built separation.

Nathan Hayes threw touchdown passes to Reis Kessel and Jordan McCants, while Drew Klein converted four field goals. That combination allowed the Bison to control the scoreboard without requiring an especially explosive offensive performance.

The original under 46.5 prediction cashed with 40 combined points. North Dakota State also covered -6.5 by nearly three touchdowns.

Sacramento State vs. Eastern Michigan Result: Eagles Cover

Eastern Michigan defeated Sacramento State 28-17 and covered the published 9.5-point spread by 1.5 points.

Eastern Michigan took control with 21 second-quarter points and entered halftime ahead 21-10. Neither team scored in the third quarter before both added one touchdown in the fourth.

Hawai’i vs. Stanford Result: Cardinal Win Wild Finish

Stanford defeated Hawai’i 37-27 in the most dramatic finish of the Week Zero FBS slate.

The Cardinal led by as many as 16 before Hawai’i scored 20 unanswered points and moved ahead 27-23 late in the fourth quarter. Stanford responded immediately.

Micah Ford scored his third touchdown with 1:41 remaining to put Stanford back in front. On Hawai’i’s next possession, Tevarua Tafiti recovered a Micah Alejado fumble and returned it 31 yards for the game-sealing touchdown.

Davis Warren threw for 310 yards and a touchdown in his Stanford debut. The Cardinal covered -4.5, while the 64 combined points sailed over the published total of 48.5.

The original under relied on a controlled offensive pace and limited explosiveness. Instead, the game produced multiple long gains and 34 combined second-half points.

New Mexico State vs. Florida State Result: Seminoles Win but Do Not Cover

Florida State beat New Mexico State 34-17 but never approached the 32.5-point margin required by the published spread.

The Seminoles generated 419 total yards, surpassed 200 yards both passing and rushing and finished 6-for-6 in the red zone. Defensively, Florida State held New Mexico State to only 47 rushing yards.

Those numbers were sufficient for a comfortable victory but not for a five-touchdown cover. New Mexico State stayed within the number from start to finish and scored in three different quarters.

The 51 combined points stayed below 53.5. This was another example of a heavily favored team winning exactly as expected while still failing as a spread wager.

Memphis vs. UNLV Result: Tigers Win 27-21

Memphis +4.5 was the strongest Week Zero recommendation, and the Tigers delivered an outright 27-21 victory at UNLV.

UNLV built a 14-7 halftime lead, but Memphis changed the game after the break. The Tigers scored 17 points in the third quarter and prevented UNLV from scoring in the fourth.

Memphis finished with 418 total yards, including 195 on the ground. The Tigers also limited UNLV to only three successful third-down conversions on 15 attempts.

The underdog result was particularly valuable because the matchup closed the Week Zero slate and represented an important early result for the Group of Six postseason race.

The 48 combined points also finished comfortably below the 56.5 total.

Week Zero Betting Trends

The clearest betting trend from the eight-game FBS slate was the success of unders. Six of eight games finished below the totals published in the original preview.

The 6-2 under record fits one common opening-week theory: offenses with new quarterbacks, coordinators and offensive-line combinations may need more time to reach their expected efficiency.

That does not mean blindly betting Week 1 unders is justified. San Jose State-USC and Hawai’i-Stanford both demonstrated how quickly late scoring can erase an under, and sportsbooks now have one additional game of information on every Week Zero participant.

The 4-4 ATS split between favorites and underdogs is equally useful. There was no simple advantage to blindly backing one side of the market. Price and matchup still mattered more than favorite or underdog status.

That matters for future totals. A team with an inconsistent offense and a capable defense can create a stronger under profile than preseason power ratings alone suggest.

Virginia Made the Strongest ACC Statement

Virginia entered Week Zero favored by only a few points and won by 26. Of all eight games, the Cavaliers delivered one of the largest gaps between market expectation and actual performance.

One game should not completely reset an ACC futures rating, but Virginia’s ability to dominate NC State from the opening possessions deserves substantially more weight than a narrow Week Zero win would have provided.

North Dakota State Looked Ready for FBS Football

North Dakota State’s move into the FBS began with a 26-point victory. The Bison allowed Jacksonville State one opening-quarter touchdown and nothing afterward.

The result does not automatically make North Dakota State the strongest team in its new environment, but it immediately validates the program’s defense and depth as factors that can translate beyond the FCS level.

USC Showed Why Huge Spreads Carry Backdoor Risk

USC led 35-3 and still failed to cover -38.5. San Jose State scored 23 fourth-quarter points after the competitive portion of the game appeared over.

This is precisely the risk attached to laying enormous numbers with elite favorites. The favorite can dominate the matchup, remove starters and still lose against the spread because the underdog keeps scoring against reserves.

Memphis Strengthened Its Group of Six Position

Memphis entered as a road underdog and left Las Vegas with one of the most valuable wins available on the Week Zero schedule.

Beating UNLV does not decide the Group of Six playoff race in August, but it gives Memphis a quality nonconference result and removes one of the most difficult games from its schedule with a victory already secured.

The college football season now moves into its first full week, with ranked teams entering the schedule from Thursday through Sunday. The most important betting adjustment is determining how much Week Zero should change preseason ratings.
