How the number is built

Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only (college football’s top division), over 2025 and 2026 together.

Miami has played 7 home games against FBS teams in that span, all of them in 2025. It went 6-1 and won by 21.9 a game. Central Michigan has played 8 road games against FBS teams, 7 in 2025 and 1 this season, went 3-5, and lost by 11.6 a game. Add the two, 33.5, and halve it: 16.75, rounded to 16.8.

Miami’s widest home win over an FBS team in that span was 37 points, 49-12 over South Florida. Its home wins by more than 41.5 came against teams outside the FBS: Bethune-Cookman 45-3 in 2025 and Florida A&M 77-7 this season. Neither counts here.

Central Michigan on the road

The road average hides a wide range. Central Michigan won 16-14 at San José State, 27-6 at Bowling Green and 28-16 at Kent State in 2025. It lost 22-28 at Akron and 21-24 at Western Michigan.

Miami is 3-0 and No. 6 in the AP poll. It won 45-6 at Stanford, 77-7 at home over Florida A&M and 33-20 at Wake Forest, and has won by 40.7 a game.

Central Michigan is 2-1. After the New Mexico loss it beat Colgate 13-10, a team outside the FBS, and Wyoming 24-10, both at home. Miami’s only home game this season was against a team outside the FBS, so 2026 adds nothing to Miami’s half of our number.

Last season

Miami went 13-3 in 2025 and won by 16.1 a game, postseason included. Central Michigan went 7-6 and was outscored by 1.0 a game, ending with a 34-7 bowl loss to Northwestern.

What this page said on 16 September

The first version of this prediction, written before either team played on 18 and 19 September, said: “Pick: Miami to win (no line posted yet).” Its price condition read: “Price discipline: none yet. This one is about the number, and I will set it when there is one.”

Now there is a number, and the bet sits on the other side of it. The old call set no price, so there was nothing for it to fail. Miami to win is still what our number expects, by 16.8 points. Against the line, the side is Central Michigan. The call moved because the line arrived at 41.5 and our number is 16.8.
