Our number is Penn State by 19.4. The bet is Penn State -10.
DraftKings has Penn State -10 at home. Our number has Penn State winning by 19.4. The gap is 9.4 points, and a side becomes a bet here at 3.
The method fits in one sentence. Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, counting only games against FBS teams in 2025 and 2026. A side is a bet when that number and the spread are at least 3 points apart.
Where the line has gone
Penn State opened at -11.5. When the line was read through ESPN on 23 September at 08:59 UTC, it was -10, a move of 1.5 points toward Wisconsin. This page does not know why it moved, and does not guess.
The moneyline went the same way. Penn State was -455 at the open and is -375 now, while Wisconsin went from +350 to +295. Take the bookmaker’s margin out and -375 prices Penn State to win 75.7% of the time.
ESPN’s FPI is firmer on Penn State than the market is. It gives Penn State 87.6%, 11.9 points above the moneyline’s 75.7%.
The home number and the road number
Penn State is 5-3 at home against FBS teams since the start of 2025, by an average of 21.6 points over those 8 games. The three losses were all in 2025 and all by 6 points or fewer: 30-24 to Oregon, 22-21 to Northwestern and 27-24 to Indiana. This season’s two home games were 45-0 over Marshall and 55-13 over Buffalo.
Wisconsin is 0-5 on the road against FBS teams over the same span, and has been outscored by 17.2 points a game over those 5 games. All five are from 2025. The closest was 17-7 at Minnesota.
The 41-13 loss to Notre Dame on 6 September is not in that number. It was played at a neutral site, and our method counts only true road games for the visitor.
So the arithmetic is short. Penn State at +21.6 and Wisconsin at -17.2 are 38.8 points apart, and half of that is Penn State by 19.4.
The full 2025 seasons agree on the direction. Wisconsin went 4-8, scored 12.8 points a game and was outscored by 8.8. Penn State went 7-6 and won by 10.5.
What 2026 adds
Penn State is 3-0, No. 13 in the AP poll, and has won by 35.0 points a game. It has allowed 22 points in three games (0, 9 and 13).
Wisconsin is 2-1, is not in the AP poll, and has won by 14.3 points a game. One of those wins was 36-9 over Western Illinois, which is not an FBS team. Against FBS teams Wisconsin is 1-1, winning by 8.0 a game: the Notre Dame loss and a 54-10 win over Eastern Michigan.
Three games prove nothing on their own. They do not contradict the number, either.
Pick: Penn State -10
The gap is 9.4 points against a threshold of 3. That makes Penn State -10 the bet, at -108 at DraftKings, where it needs to win 51.9% of the time to break even.
The sample is small on both halves. Wisconsin’s road number rests on 5 games, all from last season. Penn State’s home number rests on 8, two of them from this season.
What changes it
The line. Our number stays at Penn State by 19.4 until kickoff, so this is a bet at any price up to Penn State -16, where the gap is 3.4. At -16.5 the gap drops under 3 and it is a pass.
Availability is the other thing this page cannot state. Check the injury report before you bet, because none of the 13 games behind our number says who plays on 26 September.
The call from 16 September
The short prediction on this page was written before any line was posted. Its first line read: “Penn State has allowed 9 points all season. I’m on the Nittany Lions.” Its pick was “Penn State to win (no line posted yet)”, with this condition: “Price discipline: none yet. I will set a number here once the line is posted.”
The side stands. The call set no price, so there is no condition to test it against, and this page sets one now: Penn State -10, a bet up to -16. The figure in its first line has moved on, too. Penn State has now allowed 22 points in three games, not 9 in two.
The total
The total opened at 42.5 and is 44.5, with the over at -112 and the under at -108. That is a move of 2 points.
Against FBS teams since the start of 2025, Penn State’s games went over 44.5 in 10 of 15 and Wisconsin’s in 4 of 14. This season is higher for both. Penn State’s three games have a median total of 45 and Wisconsin’s have 54.
The two seasons disagree about Wisconsin, which scored 12.8 points a game in 2025 and has scored 33.5 a game against FBS teams this year. Two FBS games do not outweigh twelve, and twelve are a season old. Pass.
