Against winning teams, New York is better at home than Atlanta is on the road. Take the Liberty +1.5.
Atlanta is a 1.5-point favourite at Barclays Center on Monday night, -1.5 at -112 at DraftKings, read at 16:26 UTC on 21 September. The Dream opened at the same number. The moneyline has moved their way since the open, from -115 to -122.
The number
My figure compares like with like. Atlanta has a winning record, so I take New York’s home games against winning teams. New York has a winning record, so I take Atlanta’s road games against winning teams. The Liberty are 5-5 in those ten games and win them by 2.5 points on average. The Dream are 5-6 in their eleven and lose them by 2.0. Half the difference is New York by 2.25 points.
The plain venue split points the same way, more weakly. New York has won its 20 home games by 6.2 points on average, Atlanta its 20 road games by 6.1.
The market has Atlanta. Take the bookmaker’s margin out of the two moneylines, Atlanta -122 and New York +102, and the Dream win this game 52.6% of the time. ESPN’s matchup predictor goes the other way and gives New York 55.8%.
I play a side when my number and the price are at least a point apart. My number is New York by 2.25, and the price gives New York 1.5 points: a gap of 3.75, on New York. Ten and eleven games are small samples, and that is why the threshold is a full point.
Atlanta’s record is softer than it looks
Atlanta is 28-14, the best record in the Eastern Conference, with a 6.5-point average margin over 42 games. The last ten games look even better: 8-2, winning by 15.8 a game.
Split it by opponent and the edge shrinks. Against teams with a winning record, Atlanta is 9-11 and wins by 0.3 points a game. New York is 10-10 against the same group, by 0.8. Put the two teams in the same room and most of the gap in their records goes away.
The recent run was built on the bottom of the league. Atlanta’s last two games were at home against Connecticut, 103-59, and Chicago, 106-81. Connecticut is 10-32 and Chicago is 15-27.
New York at home
The Liberty are 14-6 at Barclays, scoring 87.1 and allowing 81.0. On the road they are 12-10 and allow 91.1. That is a 10.1-point swing in points allowed, and tonight they are at home.
The only meeting so far went to New York, 104-90 in Atlanta on 11 June. One game proves nothing. It does mean the season series gives no reason to fade the Liberty.
The case against, and why it loses
New York played yesterday. The Liberty won 106-69 in Toronto on Sunday afternoon and tip off at home 29 hours after that game started. They are 0-2 on the second night of a back-to-back this season, losing by 4.5 on average. Two games are not a rate.
Atlanta had Sunday off. That is the best argument for the Dream, and it is already in the price: the moneyline has moved toward Atlanta since the open.
The total
The total is 178.5, back at the number it opened at after a spell at 177.5, over -105 and under -115. Both teams have a median game total of 179 this season, half a point over the line. No bet.
Recent form splits either side of the number. Atlanta’s last ten games have averaged 179.0 points between the two teams, New York’s 173.2.
Pick: Liberty +1.5
Pick: New York Liberty +1.5 at -108, DraftKings, read 21 September 2026 at 16:26 UTC.
What would change it: a late decision by New York to rest starters on the second night of the back-to-back. If the line moves to Atlanta -3 or more, the market knows something the numbers here do not, and I would pass.
The two teams meet again at Barclays on Wednesday.
