My figure compares like with like. Las Vegas has a winning record, so I take Los Angeles’s road games against winning teams. Los Angeles has a losing record, so I take Las Vegas’s home games against losing teams. Half the difference between the two average margins is the number.

The Sparks are 3-8 in those eleven road games and lose them by 7.8 points on average. The Aces are 7-2 in their nine home games against losing teams and win them by 11.8. Half the difference is Las Vegas by 9.8.

I play a side when my number and the price are at least a point apart, which makes Las Vegas a bet at -8.5 or shorter and a pass at -9 or longer. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Las Vegas 82.4%.

Two games carry more than their share

Las Vegas’s nine home games against losing teams include a 106-58 win over Phoenix on 11 July and a 99-66 loss to the same team on 9 May. Take out both and the other seven average 13.0, which raises my number to Las Vegas by 10.4. Take out only the 48-point win and it falls to 7.5, under the pick price.

So the pick counts every game, the way this method always does, and the reader should know that the size of it leans on one blowout.

Las Vegas in form

The Aces have won five in a row and are 7-3 over their last ten, winning by 6.8 a game. The last two were against Seattle, 114-77 away on 17 September and 98-77 at home on Sunday.

They are 29-13 on the season. They are 11-10 against winning teams, so most of the margin comes from games like this one.

Los Angeles, and the one that got away

The Sparks are 16-26 and lose on the road by 4.9 a game. They beat Portland 105-84 at home on Sunday.

They also won in Las Vegas this season, 101-95 on 23 May. The Aces won the other two meetings, 105-78 and 79-69, both in Los Angeles. One road win four months ago is a fact about May.

With no total posted there is nothing to bet. Las Vegas games have a median total of 179 this season and Los Angeles games 181. Over the last ten, the Aces’ games have averaged 173.8 and the Sparks’ 168.1.

Both teams’ recent games have run under their season medians, by five points for Las Vegas and thirteen for Los Angeles. That is worth knowing when the book opens, and it is not a bet yet.
