Liberty is a 2.5-point favourite at Coastal Carolina at DraftKings. Our number is Liberty by 1.2. The gap is 1.3 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3. That is a pass.
How the number is built
Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Coastal Carolina is 3-2 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 8.4 points a game across 5 games. Liberty is 1-6 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 6.1 a game across 7 games. Coastal’s figure is 2.3 points worse. Half of that is 1.15, which rounds to Liberty by 1.2.
Five and seven games is a small base, and nearly all of it is 2025. The only 2026 game in either sample is Liberty’s 20-13 loss at James Madison on 5 September. Coastal’s one home game this season was against Fordham, which is outside the FBS and does not count.
Coastal Carolina at home
The home average hides a split. Coastal won three of those five by 13 or more: 23-8 over UL Monroe, 44-27 over Marshall and 40-27 over Georgia State, all in 2025. The two losses were 38-0 to East Carolina and 59-10 to James Madison. Those two games alone are 87 points of margin.
That is the problem with an average over five games. Take out the James Madison game and Coastal’s home figure goes from -8.4 to +1.8. The method does not do that, and neither do we, but it is why a gap of 1.3 carries no weight.
Liberty on the road
Liberty’s one road win against an FBS team in this span was 19-8 at UTEP on 8 October 2025. The six losses ran from 6 points to 14: 34-24 at Jacksonville State, 23-13 at Bowling Green, 21-7 at Old Dominion, 34-27 at Florida International, 34-28 at Louisiana Tech, and 20-13 at James Madison this season.
The spread asks Liberty to win by 3 or more on the road. It has done that once in 7 tries against FBS teams.
2026 so far
Liberty is 2-1. It lost at James Madison, beat Gardner-Webb 24-23, and beat Ball State 51-15 on 19 September. Against its two FBS opponents it has scored 32.0 a game and allowed 17.5.
Coastal Carolina is 1-2, and 0-2 against FBS teams: 31-24 at West Virginia and 22-14 at Delaware. The win was 45-7 over Fordham. Against FBS teams it has scored 19.0 a game and allowed 26.5.
Last season
Liberty went 4-8 in 2025 and was outscored by 0.9 points a game. It went 1-5 on the road. Coastal Carolina went 6-7 and was outscored by 10.9 a game, and lost its bowl game 23-14 to Louisiana Tech on 30 December.
The two teams did not meet in 2025 or so far in 2026. This is not a conference game: Liberty plays in Conference USA, Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt.
The price
Coastal Carolina opened as a 1.5-point favourite and Liberty is -2.5 now, read 24 September 2026 at 04:28 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. That is a 4-point move toward Liberty. Liberty is priced at -112 and Coastal at -108.
The moneyline has Liberty at -135 and Coastal Carolina at +114, from +100 and -120 at the open. With the margin removed, that prices Liberty to win 55.1% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has Liberty at 55.6%.
The market, FPI and our number all have Liberty as the likelier winner. They disagree by 1.3 points of margin, which is not enough.
Pick: no bet
No bet at Liberty -2.5. The gap is 1.3 points against a 3-point threshold, and it rests on 12 games split 5 and 7.
What changes it
The line has to move. At Coastal Carolina +4.5 the gap is 3.3 and Coastal becomes a bet; at +4 it is 2.8 and still a pass. The other way, at Liberty +2, the gap is 3.2 and Liberty becomes a bet. At the opening price of Coastal -1.5 the gap was 2.7, which is why the open was a pass too.
