Our number has Clemson by 5.5. At -1.5, take Clemson.
Clemson is a 1.5-point favourite at California, and the line has not moved since it opened. Our number is Clemson by 5.5. The gap is 4.0 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
California is 3-3 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 6.0 points a game across 6 games. Clemson is 4-2 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 5.0 a game across 6 games. The difference is 11.0 points in Clemson’s favour. Half of it is 5.5.
Six games a side is thin. One game in each sample comes from 2026: California’s 45-24 home loss to UCLA, and Clemson’s 51-10 loss at LSU.
Clemson on the road
Clemson’s road sample holds its best and its worst. In 2025 it won 38-10 at North Carolina, 41-10 at Boston College, 28-14 at South Carolina and 20-19 at Louisville, and lost 24-21 at Georgia Tech. Then on 5 September it lost 51-10 at LSU.
That one game is the risk in the pick. Without it, Clemson’s five road games average a 14.2-point win (71 points over 5). With it, the average is 5.0, and the edge is still 4 points.
California at home
California’s home results against FBS teams swing both ways. It beat Minnesota 27-14, North Carolina 21-18 and SMU 38-35 in 2025. It lost 45-21 to Duke and 31-21 to Virginia, and opened 2026 with the loss to UCLA.
The three wins came by 13, 3 and 3. The three losses came by 24, 10 and 21, and that is where the -6.0 comes from.
2026 so far
Both teams are 2-1, and both are 1-0 in the ACC. Clemson has played three FBS teams: the loss at LSU, then 22-7 over Georgia Southern and 28-20 over North Carolina, both at home. It has scored 20.0 a game and allowed 26.0.
California lost to UCLA, won 21-18 at Syracuse and beat Wagner 49-7. Wagner is outside the FBS, so against FBS teams California has scored 22.5 a game and allowed 31.5.
Last season
Both went 7-6 in 2025. Clemson outscored its opponents by 6.7 a game; California was outscored by 1.8. Both lost their bowl games: Clemson 22-10 to Penn State on 27 December, California 35-31 to Hawai’i on 24 December.
The two teams did not meet in 2025, and this is their first game of 2026.
