DraftKings has No. 3 Notre Dame as a 27.5-point favourite in West Lafayette. Our number is 16.6. That is a gap of 10.9 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Purdue is 1-6 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 11.9 points a game across 7 games. Notre Dame is 4-1 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 21.2 a game across 5 games. The difference is 33.1 points. Half of it is 16.6.
Those are thin samples. Seven games and five games prove very little on their own, and all five of Notre Dame’s road games were in 2025. It has not played a true road game this season: the 41-13 win over Wisconsin was at a neutral site, and the method leaves it out.
Purdue at home, and the size of its losses
The spread asks whether Notre Dame wins by 28 or more. Purdue’s home record against FBS teams says it loses most of these games. It rarely loses them by that much.
In those 7 home games, Purdue lost by more than 27.5 once, 56-3 to Indiana on 28 November 2025. The other five losses were by 16, 16, 3, 24 and 2. Its one win was 31-0 over Ball State.
Notre Dame’s road games cut the other way. It cleared 27.5 in 2 of its 5: 56-13 at Arkansas and 49-20 at Stanford. It lost the first of the five, 27-24 at Miami.
2026 so far
Notre Dame is 3-0 and has outscored its opponents 40.0 to 7.7 a game: 41-13 over Wisconsin, 52-0 over Rice and 27-10 over Michigan State.
Purdue is 1-2, and 0-2 against FBS teams. It lost 38-36 to Wake Forest at home and 52-38 at UCLA, and those two FBS opponents scored 45.0 a game. The win was 44-19 over Indiana State, a team outside the FBS.
Three games is not a season. It is the reason the method reaches back into 2025.
Last season
Notre Dame went 10-2 in 2025 and won by 24.4 a game. Purdue went 2-10, 1-10 against FBS teams, and lost by 13.1 a game.
They met once, on 20 September 2025 at Notre Dame. Notre Dame won 56-30, a 26-point margin, at home. This one is at Purdue.
The price
Purdue opened at +27.5 and is +27.5 now, read 23 September 2026 at 08:59 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. The line has not moved. The price on Purdue +27.5 is -102; on Notre Dame -27.5 it is -118.
The moneyline has Notre Dame at -4000 and Purdue at +1600, from -6500 and +2000 at the open. With the margin removed, that prices Notre Dame to win 94.3% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has it at 96.4%.
Nobody is arguing about the winner. The question is the margin, and the market’s margin is 10.9 points bigger than ours.

The number rests on 12 games, split 7 and 5. The pick is only as good as those 12.
What changes it
A line move. At Purdue +20 the gap is 3.4 and the bet stands. At +19.5 it is 2.9, and the call becomes a pass.

The call on 16 September
The first version of this prediction, published 16 September before any line was posted, said:
“Pick: Notre Dame to win (no line posted yet)”
“Price discipline: none yet. I will put a number here once the line is posted.”
It set no price, so there is no condition to test it against. Our number still has Notre Dame winning, by 16.6. At -4000 on the moneyline there is nothing to bet on that side, and the call moves to the spread, where the number points at Purdue.
That page also said: “If Purdue beats UCLA, its offence is better than its record, and I will say so here.” Purdue lost 52-38 at UCLA on 19 September.
The total
The total opened at 56.5 and is 58.5 now, over -105 and under -115.
Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, Notre Dame’s games went over 58.5 in 6 of 15, and Purdue’s in 6 of 13. Both are under half. Purdue’s two FBS games this season went the other way, at 74 and 90 points, and Notre Dame’s three games this season produced 54, 52 and 37.
A slight lean to the under at 58.5. No bet.
