USC is getting 3 points at home, and our number has USC winning by 6. Take USC +3.
The price is USC +3 at DraftKings. Our number makes USC a 6-point favourite. That puts 9 points between the market and us, three times the gap we need before we bet.
How the number is built
Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only (the top division of college football), across 2025 and 2026. A side is a bet when that number and the spread are at least 3 points apart. Anything closer is a pass.
USC is 10-0 at home against FBS teams over those two seasons, winning by 25.0 points a game. Seven of the ten games are from 2025. Oregon is 5-1 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 13.0 a game, over six games, five of them from 2025.
25.0 minus 13.0 is 12.0. Half of that is 6.0, in USC’s favour. The spread says USC loses by 3.
The 2026 part of the sample is thin. USC has played three FBS games at home this season and Oregon has played one on the road, a 39-31 loss at Oklahoma State. Four games prove nothing on their own, and here they sit inside an average of sixteen.
Where the price has gone
DraftKings opened USC at +5.5. At 08:59 UTC on 23 September it was +3, with USC at -108 and Oregon at -112.
The moneyline moved the same way. USC opened at +195 and is +140 now, and Oregon went from -238 to -166. With the bookmaker’s margin taken out, that prices Oregon to win 60.0% of the time.
ESPN’s FPI has it closer, Oregon 54% and USC 46%. The market has come 2.5 points toward USC since the open. By our number it has not come far enough.
What the results say
USC is 4-0 and No. 12 in the AP poll. It beat San José State 42-26, Fresno State 39-0 and Louisiana 49-30 at home, then won 42-35 at Rutgers on 19 September. Oregon is 2-1 and No. 20.
Oregon’s +27.7 a game in 2026 includes an 84-0 win over Portland State, which is not an FBS team. Against FBS teams Oregon is 1-1 and has been outscored by half a point a game: 34-27 over Boise State at home, then the loss at Oklahoma State.
2025 was Oregon’s year. It went 13-2, won all five of its road games, and beat USC 42-27 at home on 22 November. USC went 9-4, with a 7-0 record at home and 2-3 away.
That split is what the price leans on and what our number sets aside. USC’s 2025 road losses came at Illinois, Notre Dame and Oregon, and none of them counts here, because this game is at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In 10 home games against FBS teams across the two seasons, USC has not lost.

The bet is the spread. The moneyline at +140 asks USC to win outright, and our number is not built to price that.
What changes it
The line. USC stays a bet down to a 3-point favourite, where the gap is exactly 3. At USC -3.5 it is a pass, and that is 6.5 points from where the line sits now.

The call on 16 September
The first version of this page went up on 16 September. Its headline read: “USC is 3-0, ranked higher and getting points at home. I’ll take them.” Its pick read: “Pick: USC +5.5”. Its condition read: “Price discipline: a bet at +5.5 or better. At +4.5 it is a pass.”
At +3, by its own condition, that call is a pass, and it is withdrawn on those terms. This page’s call is USC +3 on a different measure: USC’s home margin against Oregon’s road margin, which the first version did not use. It lands on the same side at a worse price, and the gap of 9 points is what makes that price a bet.
The first version also said that if USC lost at Rutgers, the market was right. USC won 42-35.
The total
The total opened at 58.5 and is 62.5 now, over -108 and under -112.
Against FBS teams across the two seasons, 8 of USC’s 17 games went over 62.5, and 6 of Oregon’s 16 did. The medians are 58 and 54.5 points. That points under.
This season points the other way. Four of the six FBS games these two have played in 2026 went over: 68, 79 and 77 for USC, 70 for Oregon. Six games prove nothing, and they still disagree with the larger count. The total is a pass.
