Phoenix is 1-8 at home against winning teams. Take Dallas -5.5.
Dallas is a 5.5-point favourite in Phoenix on Monday night, -5.5 at -115 at DraftKings, read at 16:34 UTC on 21 September. The line opened at Dallas -6.5, so the market has moved a point toward Phoenix. That point is the reason to bet now rather than at the open.
The number
My figure compares like with like. Dallas has a winning record, so I take Phoenix’s home games against winning teams: the Mercury are 1-8 in those nine games and lose them by 8.7 points on average. Phoenix has a losing record, so I take Dallas’s road games against losing teams: the Wings are 7-1 in those eight and win them by 6.5. Half the difference is Dallas by 7.6.
The price is Dallas by 5.5. I play a side when my number and the price are at least a point apart, and here they are 2.1 apart, on Dallas.
The moneyline says the same thing more cautiously. Dallas -218 and Phoenix +180 price the Wings to win 65.7% of the time once the bookmaker’s margin is out. ESPN’s matchup predictor has Dallas at 60%.
Where the number is thin
One game carries more of that 8.7 than it should. Minnesota won 111-77 in Phoenix on 1 June, a 34-point loss. Take it out and Phoenix loses its other eight home games against winning teams by 5.5, and my number drops to Dallas by 6.0. That is still over the price, by half a point, and under my one-point threshold.
So the edge rests on counting that game. I count it: a 34-point home loss is something this team did, and the eight games without it are still 1-7. The reader who wants a margin of safety should know it is smaller than the headline number.
Dallas on the road
The overall road record is the weak point in the Dallas case. The Wings are 10-10 away from home and lose by 1.4 a game, against 16-6 and a 9.0-point margin at home.
That split is about who they played. Against winning teams on the road, Dallas is 3-9. Against the rest, 7-1. Four of those seven wins came by more than 5.5: 10 at Chicago, 8 at Los Angeles, and 13 twice in Toronto.
Recent form
Dallas has won six in a row and is 7-3 over the last ten, winning by 7.1. Phoenix is 3-7 over the same stretch.
The two teams played on Saturday. Dallas won 87-82 at home, the second Dallas win over Phoenix this season after an 85-70 win on 11 June, also in Dallas. Both teams have had one day off since.
The total
The total is 173.5, up from 172.5 at the open, over -112 and under -108. Dallas games have a median total of 172 this season, a point and a half under the line. Phoenix games have a median of 170, three and a half under. That leans to the under, and a season median is too blunt to bet on its own. No bet.
The last ten games point the same way. Dallas games have averaged 173.1 points in that stretch and Phoenix games 171.4, both under the line.
Pick: Wings -5.5
Pick: Dallas Wings -5.5 at -115, DraftKings, read 21 September 2026 at 16:34 UTC.
What would change it: if the line moves back to Dallas -6.5, the gap to my number falls to 1.1 and I would still bet it; at -7 or higher, I pass. A decision by Dallas to rest starters would kill the bet outright.
