Our number has Michigan by 1.4. At +5.5, take Iowa.
No. 18 Michigan opened as a 4.5-point favourite over No. 17 Iowa at DraftKings and is 5.5 now. Our number is Michigan by 1.4. The gap is 4.1 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Michigan is 8-1 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 15.3 points a game across 9 games. Iowa is 3-2 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 12.6 a game across 5 games. The difference is 2.7 points. Half of it, from the unrounded averages, is 1.4.
Iowa’s five road games are all from 2025. It has played all three of its 2026 games at home, so this is its first road game of the season.
Michigan at home
Michigan’s home record against FBS teams is the strongest number on either side. It won 34-17 over New Mexico, 63-3 over Central Michigan, 24-10 over Wisconsin, 24-7 over Washington and 21-16 over Purdue in 2025. The one loss was 27-9 to Ohio State.
This season the margins have been smaller. Michigan beat Western Michigan 13-12 and Oklahoma 17-10 before a 52-17 win over UTEP on 19 September. The 60-point Central Michigan game lifts the average; without it, the other eight average 9.8 (78 over 8).
Iowa on the road
Iowa won 38-28 at Rutgers, 37-0 at Wisconsin and 40-16 at Nebraska in 2025. It lost 16-13 at Iowa State and 26-21 at USC. Both losses were by five points or fewer.
That is the case for the pick in one line. In five road games against FBS teams, Iowa has not lost by more than 5, and the spread is 5.5.
2026 so far
Both teams are 3-0, and neither has played a Big Ten game. Iowa beat Northern Illinois 40-0, Iowa State 16-13 and Northern Iowa 55-0. Northern Iowa is outside the FBS, so against FBS teams Iowa has scored 28.0 a game and allowed 6.5.
Michigan has played three FBS teams, all at home. It has scored 27.3 a game and allowed 13.0.
Last season
Both went 9-4 in 2025. Iowa won by 13.2 a game and ended with a 34-27 win over Vanderbilt on 31 December. Michigan won by 7.2 a game and ended with a 41-27 loss to Texas the same day.
The two teams did not meet in 2025 or so far in 2026.
The price
Michigan opened at -4.5 and is -5.5 now, read 24 September 2026 at 04:29 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. That is a 1-point move toward Michigan. Both sides are priced at -110.
The moneyline has Michigan at -218 and Iowa at +180, from -192 and +160 at the open. With the margin removed, that prices Michigan to win 65.7% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has Michigan at 65.1%.
Michigan is the likelier winner by both measures, and by ours. The disagreement is 4.1 points of margin.
Pick: Iowa +5.5
Iowa +5.5 at -110. The gap is 4.1 points against a 3-point threshold.
It rests on 14 games, split 9 and 5. The point of movement since the open is part of the edge: at -4.5 the gap was 3.1.
What changes it
A line move back toward the open. At Iowa +4.5 the gap is 3.1 and the bet stands. At +4 it is 2.6, and the call becomes a pass.
Availability is the other thing, and this page does not state it. Check the injury report before you bet.

Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, Michigan’s games went over 38.5 in 9 of 16, and Iowa’s in 8 of 14. Michigan’s three games this season produced 25, 27 and 69 points. Iowa’s two against FBS teams produced 40 and 29.
