Our number has Kentucky by 3.5. At +20.5, take South Alabama.
Kentucky is a 20.5-point favourite at DraftKings, up from 19.5 at the open. Our number is Kentucky by 3.5. The gap is 17.0 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Kentucky is 3-4 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 0.6 points a game across 7 games. South Alabama is 2-5 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 6.4 a game across 7 games. The difference is 7.0 points. Half of it is 3.5.
Seven games a side is a small sample, and one game on each side comes from 2026. The method also does not adjust for who the games were against. Kentucky’s home list holds Ole Miss, Texas, Tennessee and Alabama; South Alabama’s road list holds Auburn, North Texas, Troy, Georgia State, UL Monroe, Texas State and Tulane.
Kentucky at home
The spread asks whether Kentucky wins by 21 or more. In 7 home games against FBS teams it did that twice: 48-23 over Eastern Michigan and 38-7 over Florida.
The other home results were a 24-16 win over Toledo and four losses: 30-23 to Ole Miss, 16-13 to Texas, 56-34 to Tennessee and, on 12 September, 45-17 to Alabama.
South Alabama’s road games were five losses by 4 to 23 points, and two wins. It lost 31-15 at Auburn, 36-22 at North Texas, 31-24 at Troy, 49-26 at Texas State and 28-24 at Tulane this season. It won 38-31 at Georgia State and 26-14 at UL Monroe. Only the Texas State game was lost by more than 21.
2026 so far
South Alabama is 2-1. It beat SE Louisiana 39-14 and Ohio 41-36 at home, with the Tulane loss between them. Against its two FBS opponents it has scored 32.5 a game and allowed 32.0.
Kentucky is 2-1 and 1-1 in the SEC. It beat Youngstown State 45-13, lost to Alabama, then won 31-21 at Texas A&M on 19 September. Against FBS teams it has scored 24.0 a game and allowed 33.0. This is not a conference game: South Alabama plays in the Sun Belt.
Last season
Kentucky went 5-7 in 2025 and lost by 3.4 points a game. It was 4-3 at home and 1-4 on the road, with no bowl game.
South Alabama went 4-8 and lost by 3.9 a game, 2-4 at home and 2-4 on the road. The two teams did not meet in 2025 or so far in 2026.
The price
Kentucky opened at -19.5 and is -20.5 now, read 24 September 2026 at 04:28 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. That is a 1-point move toward Kentucky. Both sides of the spread are priced at -110.
The moneyline has Kentucky at -1450 and South Alabama at +850, from -1650 and +950 at the open. With the margin removed, that prices Kentucky to win 89.9% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has Kentucky at 90.5%.
Every measure has Kentucky winning, ours included, by 3.5. The disagreement is 17.0 points of margin.
Pick: South Alabama +20.5
South Alabama +20.5 at -110. The gap is 17.0 points against a 3-point threshold.
It rests on 14 games, split 7 and 7. A gap this wide may partly reflect that the method does not weigh opponents, and that is the honest weakness here. Kentucky has won by 21 or more at home twice in seven tries against FBS teams, and the price asks for it again.
What changes it
It would take a 14.5-point move to kill it. At South Alabama +6.5 the gap is 3.0 and the bet stands. At +6 it is 2.5, and the call becomes a pass.
Availability is the other thing, and this page does not state it. Check the injury report before you bet.
The total
The total opened at 55.5 and is 54.5 now, over -115 and under -105.
Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, South Alabama’s games went over 54.5 in 8 of 13, and Kentucky’s in 4 of 13. This season South Alabama’s three games produced 53, 52 and 77 points. Kentucky’s produced 58, 62 and 52.
Pass on the total at 54.5. The two samples point in opposite directions, and they cancel out.
