The Dodgers Can Win If…

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently won 4-3 against the Minnesota Twins. Tyler Glasnow shined on the mound, pitching 7 innings with 12 strikeouts. At the plate, Shohei Ohtani hit a home run, and Freddie Freeman drove in two runs.

The Dodgers’ offense ranks 3rd in slugging percentage at .444 and 2nd in home runs with 157. Their ability to hit the long ball can be a game-changer. Shohei Ohtani leads the team with 37 home runs, ranking 2nd in the league.

Emmet Sheehan will start for the Dodgers with an ERA of 4.41. The Dodgers’ pitching staff ranks 5th in strikeouts with 908, showing they can shut down opposing hitters. If Sheehan can keep the Red Sox off balance, the Dodgers have a strong chance to win.

The Red Sox Can Win If…

The Boston Red Sox are coming off a 9-8 win against the Philadelphia Phillies. Carlos Narváez and Romy Gonzalez were key players in this game, each hitting home runs. Lucas Giolito started on the mound, allowing five runs in four innings, but the offense backed him up with strong hitting.

The Red Sox have shown strong hitting stats this season. They rank first in doubles with 209 and fourth in slugging percentage at .427. This offensive power gives them a good chance to score runs and win games.

Brayan Bello will start for the Red Sox against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bello has a 3.23 ERA and a 6-4 record, showing his ability to keep runs off the board. With strong pitching and a powerful lineup, the Red Sox have a solid chance to win this game.

The Lean

The Dodgers are favored on the moneyline at -120. Given their strong batting stats, like a .254 average and 157 home runs, they have an edge. The Red Sox have a slight disadvantage with a .252 average and 129 home runs. My model projects the Dodgers to win with a score of 6-4.

The total for the game is set at 10.0 runs. Both teams have solid offensive numbers, but the Dodgers’ higher slugging percentage suggests more scoring potential. The Red Sox’s pitching ERA of 3.79 ranks 9th, which might limit the Dodgers slightly. My model predicts a total of 10 runs, so consider the over at 10.0 (-105).

Red Sox, Dodgers Look to Shake Off Post-Break Slump

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox are both searching for consistency after sluggish starts to the second half as they open a three-game series Friday night at Fenway Park.

Dodgers Hope to Start Road Trip Strong

Los Angeles is just 2-4 since the All-Star break and 4-11 overall in July. But the Dodgers at least salvaged some momentum with a dramatic 4-3 win over Minnesota on Wednesday, capped by Freddie Freeman’s walk-off two-run single.

Freeman, who entered the game batting just .210 in July, admitted it was a badly needed spark.

“We needed that one,” Freeman said. “That was a huge win for us. Huge series win.”

However, the Dodgers could be without Mookie Betts on Friday as he tends to a personal matter. Manager Dave Roberts said Betts’ situation is not serious, but it’s unclear if he’ll suit up.

Betts, who spent six seasons in Boston and won the 2018 AL MVP while leading the Red Sox to a World Series title over the Dodgers, has been an All-Star in four of his five years in LA.

Even if Betts is out, Shohei Ohtani remains must-watch. Ohtani has homered in five straight games entering Friday, closing in on the MLB record of eight consecutive games set by Dale Long, Don Mattingly, and Ken Griffey Jr.

Roberts hinted Fenway Park could play right into Ohtani’s power stroke.

“If he has the same approach he’s had, that Green Monster is very short,” Roberts said. “Any fly ball he hits will be a homer.”

Red Sox Battling Injuries, Trying to Stay Afloat

Like the Dodgers, Boston is 2-4 since the break despite a wild 9-8 extra-inning win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. Carlos Narvaez was the unlikely hero, hitting a two-run homer in the 11th inning after being called for catcher’s interference in back-to-back games.

“You gotta move forward,” Narvaez said. “You gotta stay on the attack mode.”

But the Red Sox could be shorthanded. Third baseman Marcelo Mayer left Wednesday’s win with a wrist injury and is awaiting MRI results.

Friday’s pitching matchup features Boston’s Brayan Bello (6-4, 3.23 ERA) against LA’s Emmet Sheehan (1-1, 4.41 ERA). Bello allowed three runs in six innings in his only career start vs. the Dodgers last year, while Sheehan, a Boston College alum, will be making his Fenway Park debut.
