Hot-Hitting Cubs Eager to Keep Rolling Against White Sox
Cubs Dominate in Crosstown Opener
The Chicago Cubs showed no mercy in the first game of the weekend set against the visiting White Sox, exploding for a 13-3 win at Wrigley Field on Friday. The win marked the Cubs’ third in four games overall and their eighth in the last nine against their South Side rivals dating back to July 2023.
Now with 257 runs scored through 45 games — an average of 5.7 per outing — the Cubs rank second in the majors behind only the Dodgers. The offensive barrage is showing no signs of slowing down.

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s Breakout Season Continues
One of the most pleasant surprises for the North Siders has been the continued ascension of 23-year-old center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. On Friday, he went 4-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs, raising his average to .282 and boosting his team-leading totals to 12 home runs and 49 hits.
“He’s playing at a really high level right now,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell.
“The ability that he has now to hit home runs has been a pretty big surprise, but you need surprises, and it’s been an important one.”
Crow-Armstrong’s all-around play has added a new dimension to the Cubs’ lineup and has made them even more dangerous on both sides of the ball.
Boyd to Take the Ball for Cubs
Veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd (3-2, 2.78 ERA) is set to start Saturday’s game for the Cubs. Boyd has worked at least six innings in three of his past four outings and is coming off a two-run, six-inning performance against the Mets.
A familiar face to the White Sox from his time with the Tigers, Boyd has a career 4-9 record with a 4.98 ERA in 19 starts against the South Siders.
Defensive Woes Continue for White Sox
It was a rough day all around for the White Sox, who committed two costly errors that led to five unearned runs in Friday’s blowout. The loss was their sixth straight against the Cubs and dropped them to 13-31, the second-most losses in the majors.
“It’s a tough environment and you saw that all over the field on both sides,” said White Sox manager Will Venable.
“You’re just kind of vulnerable to what happens out there. And it’s really tough for everybody.”
Venable, a former Cubs coach, acknowledged the challenges of playing at Wrigley on a windy day — but the mounting errors are becoming too frequent to dismiss.
Burke Gets the Nod for White Sox
Right-hander Sean Burke (2-4, 4.15 ERA) will take the mound for the White Sox in Game 2. The 25-year-old was solid in his last outing, giving up just one run over four innings in a win over Miami. Saturday will mark Burke’s first career start against the Cubs.
