Chicago Cubs vs Colorado Rockies Picks and Predictions May 28th 2025

Last Updated on

The Chicago Cubs have leaned on their pitching staff to fuel a hot streak despite fielding the league’s highest-scoring offense. After securing back-to-back wins over the Colorado Rockies to open the series, the Cubs will go for a sweep Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.

Chicago leads the majors in runs (328), hits (506), and ranks second in batting average (.262), yet it has been the arms of Jameson Taillon and Cade Horton doing the heavy lifting. The duo has combined to allow just three earned runs over 12 1/3 innings in the first two games of the series.

Rookie Matt Shaw delivered the clutch blow in Tuesday’s 4-3 extra-innings victory, a bloop walk-off single that marked Chicago’s ninth win in its last 11 games.

“We didn’t have a great night with the bats again, but we pitched really well,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. “It’s something we emphasize — being a tough team that can beat you in different ways.”

Boyd Gets the Ball for Finale

Veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd (4-2, 3.42 ERA) will take the mound for Chicago in Wednesday’s finale. He’s coming off his shortest outing of the season — a four-inning start against Cincinnati in which he gave up four earned runs on eight hits. Despite that effort, the Cubs pulled off a 13-6 win.

Boyd, who hasn’t lost in his last six outings, acknowledged the need for quicker outs moving forward.

“I’ve got to be better at putting guys away a little sooner,” Boyd said. “You just keep going. You keep pitching.”

This will be Boyd’s first career appearance against the Rockies and his 193rd MLB start overall.

Rockies Facing Historic Struggles

The Colorado Rockies are in the midst of a historically rough campaign. With Tuesday’s loss, they fell to 9-46 and extended their record-setting streak to 21 consecutive series losses — the worst such stretch in modern MLB history.

One of the few bright spots on Tuesday came from center fielder Brenton Doyle, who went deep and drove in two runs. Doyle is batting .214 on the year after hitting 23 homers in 2024.

“It was a good night for him; that’s a stepping stone,” said Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer. “We expect more of that.”

Gordon Looks to Build Momentum

Right-hander Tanner Gordon (1-1, 4.38 ERA) will start for the Rockies. After a rough rookie season in 2024 (0-6, 8.65 ERA), Gordon appears to be turning a corner. He earned his first career win last week against the Yankees, surrendering two earned runs over six innings.

Gordon made his 2025 debut on May 8, giving up four runs in 6 1/3 innings to Detroit. He’ll be facing the Cubs for the first time in his career Wednesday.
