The Cubs Can Win If…

The Chicago Cubs are looking to bounce back after a recent 8-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. In that game, Matt Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong each hit a home run, showing their ability to score quickly. Colin Rea struggled on the mound, giving up three home runs, but the Cubs’ offense still managed to collect seven hits.

The Cubs’ lineup boasts strong hitting stats this season. They rank second in slugging percentage at .446 and third in home runs with 152. With players like Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong in the lineup, the Cubs have the power to change the game’s outcome with one swing.

On the mound, Shota Imanaga is set to start for the Cubs. Imanaga has been reliable with a 2.40 ERA and a WHIP of 0.92. His performance will be crucial as the Cubs aim to capitalize on their offensive strengths and secure a win.

The White Sox Can Win If…

The Chicago White Sox are coming off a strong performance against the Tampa Bay Rays, winning 11-9. In that game, Colson Montgomery was a standout, driving in five runs with a home run and a double. Kyle Teel also had a great game, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run.

The White Sox’s offense has been effective, with a notable rank of 11th in doubles and walks this season. Their ability to get on base and hit for extra bases can make a big difference in this game. Adrian Houser will take the mound with an impressive ERA of 1.89, giving the team a solid chance to keep the opposing hitters in check.

Adrian Houser’s strong pitching has been a key factor for the White Sox. With a WHIP of 1.23, he has been effective in limiting base runners. The team’s recent success and Houser’s performance could lead them to another victory against their city rivals, the Chicago Cubs.

The Lean

The Cubs are the recommended pick for the moneyline at -184. The Cubs have a stronger hitting lineup, ranking 4th in batting average and 2nd in slugging percentage. The White Sox, on the other hand, rank 21st in batting average and 24th in slugging percentage. My model projects the Cubs to win with a score of 5-3.

For the over/under, the recommendation is to take the under at 8.5 (-110). Both teams have mid-tier pitching, with the Cubs having a slightly better earned run average at 3.87 compared to the White Sox’s 4.08. The model projects a total score of 8 runs, suggesting the under is a safer bet.

Strong Pitching Matchup on Tap as Cubs, White Sox Renew Rivalry

The Crosstown Classic is back as the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox collide Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field. This time, a strong pitching duel headlines the series opener, with dominant left-hander Shota Imanaga set to face off against the surging Adrian Houser.

Imanaga (7-3, 2.40 ERA) didn’t pitch when the Cubs swept the South Siders at Wrigley Field in mid-May due to a strained hamstring. But since returning to the rotation, he’s been one of the Cubs’ most reliable arms, holding a 2.13 ERA in 25 1/3 innings over his four July starts. His latest gem came against Boston, where he fired seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

“Look, when you miss six or seven weeks, you don’t expect to come back in peak form,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “It happens, but it’s hard to do. But he’s pitched really well. And that’s the nature of pitching. You get locked in for 90 pitches and the next start doesn’t promise you anything. You have to get locked in again. Shota is just so good at getting people out.”

The Cubs’ rotation hasn’t shared Imanaga’s consistency. Chicago dropped two of three to Kansas City earlier this week, allowing 20 runs in the series. Even in their lone win, a six-hit combined shutout, the offense sputtered again in Wednesday’s finale, where only solo home runs from Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw kept it close in an 8-4 defeat.

Meanwhile, the White Sox have been surprisingly hot since the All-Star break, winning five of six. They rallied to an 11-9 victory over Tampa Bay on Wednesday behind a six-run eighth inning.

“The group, they’re playing well, complementing each other, they trust each other,” White Sox manager Will Venable said. “They’ve created something real; they feel extremely confident and are going out there and doing their job and they want to do it for each other.”

The South Siders, who needed 21 games to record five wins before the break, are seeing their young talent blossom. Colson Montgomery has homered in back-to-back games, while Kyle Teel collected his first career homer as part of a four-hit night.

Houser (5-2, 1.89 ERA) will try to keep the momentum going for the White Sox. He’s 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA in July and carries plenty of familiarity against the Cubs, with 15 career appearances against them. His last outing was a no-decision in Pittsburgh, allowing four runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings.

Imanaga, meanwhile, will be looking for redemption after his lone start against the White Sox last year saw him allow five runs (only one earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Lenyn Sosa took him deep for a solo shot in that matchup.

Expect a tense, low-scoring battle as both clubs look to assert bragging rights on the South Side.
