Athletics Open Road Trip Against Tigers Ace Tarik Skubal
The Oakland Athletics are kicking off a nine-game road swing this week, but they’ll have to face one of baseball’s toughest arms right out of the gate. The Detroit Tigers send ace Tarik Skubal to the mound Tuesday night to open a three-game series at Comerica Park.

Skubal’s Dominant Stretch
Since dropping his first two starts of 2025, Skubal (8-2, 2.06 ERA) has been sensational. The reigning AL Cy Young winner is unbeaten in his last 13 starts, going 8-0 with five no-decisions, and has allowed just three runs over his past 36 1/3 innings.
While his strikeout totals have dipped a bit — six K’s in each of his three June outings — the results keep piling up. Skubal overcame tricky conditions in his last start Thursday (rain delay and damp field) to toss 5 2/3 solid innings against the Pirates.
“It wasn’t a great day for Tarik to pitch,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He won’t give himself a pass, but I will.”
Skubal owns a 6-0 record with a 1.88 ERA at home this year and is 3-2 with a 2.60 ERA in eight career outings against the A’s.
Severino Trying to Stay on Track
Opposing Skubal will be veteran Luis Severino (2-7, 4.42 ERA), who seems to have righted the ship after two rough early June outings. Severino tossed 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball against Kansas City on June 13 and followed that with a two-run, five-inning effort against Houston last Wednesday — despite allowing nine hits.
Severino has dominated the Tigers throughout his career: a 5-1 record and 1.81 ERA across eight starts. He’ll look to continue that trend as Oakland tries to rebound from a disappointing home series against Cleveland.
“We just didn’t get anything going until late in the game,” Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said after his team stranded 10 runners in Sunday’s 3-0 shutout loss to the Guardians.
Tigers Aiming to Build Momentum
Detroit, meanwhile, broke a three-game losing streak with a 9-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday and will aim to build momentum at home behind their ace.
For the A’s, slowing Skubal’s roll would be a statement win — but it won’t come easy as Oakland’s bats face one of the most dominant starters in the game today.
