Pirates’ Hot Bats Face Brewers’ Ace Peralta in Game 2
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ offense has suddenly come to life, and they’ll face their toughest test yet on Tuesday night. After snapping the Brewers’ four-game winning streak in the series opener, the Pittsburgh Pirates will look to secure a series win against the host Milwaukee Brewers and their ace, Freddy Peralta.
Pittsburgh’s Plate Discipline
After struggling to score for weeks, the Pirates’ bats have exploded. They pounded out 15 hits in a win on Sunday and followed it up with 14 more in Monday’s 5-4 victory over Milwaukee. The breakout star was Nick Gonzales, who had a career-high five hits, while veteran Tommy Pham finally launched his first home run of the season. It marks the first time since May of 2023 that the Pirates have had back-to-back games with at least 14 hits.
The Peralta Problem
The Pirates’ hot hitters will have their hands full with Brewers ace Freddy Peralta (7-4, 2.76 ERA). The right-hander has been dominant over his last seven starts, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.89 ERA. He has won his last two starts and is the “stopper” Milwaukee needs to halt their brief one-game skid. This premier pitching matchup against a hot lineup will be the top story on the scores and odds board.
Heaney Seeks a Rebound
The Pirates will counter with lefty Andrew Heaney (3-6, 3.94 ERA), who is looking to bounce back from a terrible outing. Heaney was shelled for a season-high seven runs in his last start on Thursday and has a 6.07 ERA over his last five starts.
“It’s not the first time I’ve had a bad start,” the veteran said. “You’ve just got to go out there… and go make better pitches.”
Brewers Not Panicking
Despite the loss on Monday, the Brewers aren’t hitting the panic button. The loss came after a stretch where they won four straight and scored 43 runs. Their superstar, Christian Yelich, also continued his torrid streak with his 15th homer of the season.
“How do you get mad at a team that’s done what they’ve done since the end of May?” manager Pat Murphy said. “It just goes to show you. Any guy on the mound, anybody beats anybody.” How top MLB teams handle a single loss after a long win streak is a key topic in our expert betting guide.
