Brewers, buoyed by blowout, chase more offense vs. Twins
Milwaukee heads into Saturday afternoon’s middle game of the three-game set in Minneapolis riding the momentum from a 17–6 rout on Friday night. After scoring all of their runs in the first three innings, the Brewers will look to keep Minnesota’s pitching staff on its heels as they chase a series win. Yelich’s Historic Night
Christian Yelich shouldered much of the offensive load in Game 1, tying the franchise record with eight RBIs—becoming the first player since RBIs were officially tracked in 1920 to drive in eight runs without a homer. He collected 10 hits in his last 19 at-bats and now sits at 14 homers and 52 RBIs over 71 games, despite a .252 average on the season. “There’s not a lot of nights like this during the season, so you’ve got to appreciate it when they do happen,” Yelich said.
Pitching Matchups
The Brewers turn to veteran left-hander José Quintana (4–2, 3.35 ERA), who seeks to snap a five-start winless stretch in which he’s posted a 5.47 ERA. Quintana’s last outing on June 14 saw him yield seven runs in 4⅓ innings against the Cardinals, but he owns an 8–8 record with a 3.93 ERA in 22 career starts versus Minnesota.
Minnesota counters with righty Simeon Woods Richardson (2–3, 5.13 ERA), who despite a winless skid has shown flashes of brilliance—most recently throwing five scoreless, one-hit innings against Houston. He will face Milwaukee for the first time in his career.
Twins’ Response and Hitting Surge
The Twins’ pitching staff has surrendered 10 or more runs four times in its last ten games, including two 16-run drubbings earlier this month. On Friday, manager Rocco Baldelli even turned to infielder Jonah Bride to pitch the ninth inning, and Bride was tagged for five runs, pushing his ERA to 15.00. “We’ve got to come together as a team right now and collectively step up, myself included,” Baldelli said.
At the plate, infielder Brooks Lee remains a bright spot, extending his career-high hitting streak to 19 games with a single on Friday. He’s batting .333 (25-for-75) during this surge.
