Mets Carry Red-Hot Bats and Gloves Into Game 2 Against Diamondbacks
The New York Mets are rolling on both sides of the ball and will look to continue their dominance on Wednesday night when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle game of a three-game series.
Mets Offense and Defense in Peak Form
Following a 27-run outburst over two games, the Mets are surging with confidence. Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Pete Alonso all homered in Tuesday’s 8-3 win, building on Monday’s 19-5 blowout of the Nationals.

“There’s a lot to like about the offense right now,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.
But it wasn’t just the bats on display. The Mets flashed elite defense, making a trio of dazzling plays in the fourth inning Tuesday. They entered the night leading MLB in fielding percentage (.990), and their 2.60 team ERA is also tops in the majors.
“When you string plays like that together, it’s great momentum for the team,” said pitcher David Peterson.

Mets Turn to Waddell, D-backs Counter With Burnes
The Mets will recall left-hander Brandon Waddell from Triple-A to either start or serve as the bulk pitcher. Waddell last appeared in the majors in 2021 but has impressed at Triple-A Syracuse, going 1-1 with a 1.54 ERA over five starts.
Corbin Burnes (0-1, 4.05 ERA) will start for the Diamondbacks. Burnes allowed three runs (one earned) over 5 1/3 innings in his last start and owns a 2-1 record with a 4.35 ERA in six career appearances against New York.
Diamondbacks Seeking Stability
Arizona has lost five of its last six, allowing at least seven runs in all five defeats. The club’s pitching staff has struggled mightily after a strong start to the season.

“It’s very inspiring to see that type of baseball,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of the Mets. “It helps you get better.”
Eduardo Rodriguez surrendered all eight Mets runs Tuesday, five of which came with two outs. Arizona failed to get a runner past second base until the fifth inning.
