Mets Target Sweep With Early Offense Against White Sox
The New York Mets have struggled to find consistency at the plate this season, but recent performances suggest a change. Their ability to strike early has become a reliable weapon, and they’ll look to use it again Wednesday afternoon to complete a sweep of the Chicago White Sox.
With the first pitch moved up to 1:10 p.m. ET due to impending rain, the Mets will send right-hander Griffin Canning (5-1, 2.88 ERA) to the mound. He’ll be opposed by fellow righty Shane Smith (1-3, 2.36 ERA), who’s still looking to establish himself in his rookie campaign.

Mets’ First-Inning Momentum Continues
The Mets opened Tuesday night’s 6-4 victory with a bang, launching two-run homers from Pete Alonso and Jared Young in the first inning. They sent 10 batters to the plate and tallied six hits in the frame, continuing a recent stretch of strong starts.
It was New York’s fourth consecutive win and marked the first time they scored six runs in a game since May 11. Before that, they endured a 13-game stretch with five runs or fewer—matching their longest such drought since 2021.
The key has been production early in games. In five of their last six contests, the Mets have scored within the first three innings, a trend that could favor them again against a vulnerable White Sox rotation.

White Sox Search for Bright Spots in Tough Season
Despite owning the worst record in the American League at 17-38, the White Sox have seen some individual progress. Tuesday’s starter Jonathan Cannon rebounded after a rough first inning, retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced.
Shane Smith will now look to take the next step. In his last two starts, Smith struggled early before finding rhythm in the middle innings. On May 21, he allowed three first-inning runs over five frames against Seattle. In the start before that, he surrendered six runs (one earned) in the second inning against the Cubs but still completed five innings.
“You can’t get to the fifth inning if you don’t get through the first,” Smith said. “To have the rocky first and seconds is tough, but you just have to keep throwing.”
Griffin Canning, on the other hand, exited his last outing early due to a rain delay after giving up three runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Dodgers. Still, his career numbers vs. Chicago are excellent: 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts.
