The Los Angeles Angels flipped the script in dramatic fashion Monday night, turning what looked like a deflating loss into their most exhilarating win of the season. Now they’ll look to carry that momentum into Game 2 of their three-game series with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night at Petco Park.

With two outs in the ninth and the Angels trailing by two, Taylor Ward delivered the biggest hit of the season for Los Angeles — a grand slam that capped a six-run inning and stunned the San Diego crowd into silence. The blast was Ward’s ninth of the year and came after Padres closer Robert Suarez imploded, walking four consecutive batters to tie the game.

Soriano does have some recent success against San Diego, earning a win in his only career start versus the Padres last June.
San Diego counters with Dylan Cease (1-2, 4.91 ERA), who’s been in search of his second win since early April. The right-hander is coming off a dazzling performance against the Yankees, where he carried a no-hitter into the seventh before leaving with forearm cramps.
Cease struck out nine and allowed just one hit over 6 2/3 innings in that game.
The Padres are hoping Cease’s latest start is a sign of things to come — and a potential reset for a bullpen that imploded in Game 1.
Darvish Nearing Return
There’s more good news on the horizon for San Diego. Yu Darvish is scheduled to make a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A El Paso. The veteran, sidelined this spring with elbow inflammation, could rejoin the rotation by late May if all goes well.
