A Bizarre Homecoming: Surging Giants Look to End Home Losing Streak vs. Nationals
It is one of the most bizarre and inexplicable trends of the 2025 Major League Baseball season. The San Francisco Giants are a team with a split personality. On the road, they are confident, resilient, and successful. At home, in front of their own fans, they have been completely inept. After a successful road trip that saw them climb back into the thick of the National League wild-card race, the San Francisco Giants will return to Oracle Park on Friday night with a singular, massive goal: to finally end their confounding eight-game home losing streak as they open a three-game series against the struggling Washington Nationals.
The Road Warriors Return to a House of Horrors
The Giants’ recent road trip was a resounding success and a testament to the character in their clubhouse. After a trade deadline that saw them “sell off” key bullpen pieces, many expected the team to fold. Instead, they rallied, winning two of three games against both the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates to finish the trip 4-2. Their offense has been sparked by the hot hitting of center fielder Jung Hoo Lee, who hit .417 on the trip, and first baseman Dominic Smith, who is currently on an 11-game hitting streak. Despite being in a difficult position, the belief in the clubhouse has not wavered.
“This clubhouse has a belief that we can win and go on a run,” Smith said. “Understanding that it’s one game at a time, and if we can win that, then we’ll stack enough series wins, and then who knows where we’ll be at the end of the year.”
That belief, however, has not translated to results at home. Their last homestand was an 0-6 disaster, and their eight-game losing streak at Oracle Park is a massive psychological hurdle they must overcome.
The table below provides a snapshot of the two teams as they enter this interleague series. For a full recap of their most recent games, you can check the official MLB game results.
Team | Record | Division Standing | Recent Form (Last 10) |
San Francisco Giants | 62-62 | 3rd in NL West | 4-6 |
Washington Nationals | 43-82 | 5th in NL East | 3-7 |
The Irvin Factor: A Giant Killer
The task of breaking their home curse will be made even more difficult by the man on the mound for the Nationals. Right-hander Jake Irvin (8-6, 4.89 ERA) has been a “Giant killer” throughout his career. In four starts against San Francisco, he has a 3-1 record with a stellar 2.77 ERA. His most dominant performance came in their last meeting in May, a game in which he threw eight brilliant shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. Irvin has also been excellent on the road recently, allowing just two total earned runs over his last 12 innings in away starts. The challenge of facing a pitcher who has had your number is a key topic in our expert betting guide.
The Pitching Matchup: A Deeper Look
Friday’s game features a pitching matchup between the confident Irvin and a young Giants pitcher who struggled mightily in his first career start. Kai-Wei Teng (0-1, 13.50) was shelled for five runs in just 3 1/3 innings by the Mets in his starting debut. The Giants will be hoping he can find his footing and give their team a chance to win.
Pitcher | W-L (2025) | ERA (2025) | Career vs. Opponent |
Jake Irvin (WSH) | 8-6 | 4.89 | 3-1, 2.77 ERA (4 starts) |
Kai-Wei Teng (SF) | 0-1 | 13.50 | 6.75 ERA (1 appearance) |
The Betting Outlook
The scores and odds for this matchup will be fascinating. The Giants are the better team on paper, but their home losing streak and the pitching mismatch make the Nationals a very dangerous underdog.
