Louisville looks to break a two-game losing streak on Saturday as it heads to Pittsburgh to take on the struggling Panthers for the second time in 10 days.

Louisville's last victory came on Jan. 5 against Pitt (6-10, 1-4 ACC), a 75-72 home win. That game featured 16 lead changes in a thrilling second half. El Ellis paced the Cardinals (10-6, 4-2) by scoring 14 of his 18 points after the break.

Ellis started off the year on the bench but got the starting nod in the Cardinals' most recent game, a 79-63 home loss to North Carolina State on Wednesday. Ellis shot 1-for-6 from the field against the Wolfpack and finished with just three points in 16 minutes. Noah Locke, normally the team's starting shooting guard, came in to replace Ellis and scored 13 points in 32 minutes.

"El has been playing well -- he's got a long way to go defensively," Louisville coach Chris Mack said. "Noah responded the way he needed to on the offensive end, but again, you can't give points and then get points from the other guy. He's got to be able to hold his water at that end of the floor. El was a bit more dynamic in terms of getting in the lane for our team."

Locke leads Louisville with an average of 10.9 points per game. Jarrod West, a transfer from Marshall, is the only Cardinal to start every game this season.

Pitt seems to be showing some promise despite losing three of its past four games. The Panthers earned a hard-fought 69-67 win against Boston College on Jan. 8 but then fell apart Tuesday at Syracuse, losing 77-61. Pitt shot just 5 of 21 from the field in the second half against the Orange and committed 13 turnovers in the game.

"I thought our offense, not being able to make shots and turning the basketball over really affected our defense," Pitt coach Jeff Capel said. "We didn't defend well for the last part of the first half, the whole second half, which led to us being very poor offensively."

The Panthers are averaging just 62.3 points per game thanks to hitting only 41.2 percent of their shots from the floor, 31 percent from 3-point range and 67.9 percent from the free-throw line, all dead last in the ACC.

John Hugley leads the Panthers with 15.2 points per game, but he was limited to just eight against Syracuse after scoring 32 in the win against Boston College.

Louisville leads the all-time series against Pitt 21-6, as the programs were rivals in the Big East and now the ACC. The Cardinals have won the past five matchups.

Louisville Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Panthers Recap DEC 22TH 2020

No. 11 Louisville made seven of 10 free throws in overtime to escape with a 73-68 win over host Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals (14-3, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won despite trailing for nearly all of regulation and shooting just 38.3 percent from the field while being outrebounded for just the third time this season.

In a game that saw three technical fouls issued, one on Louisville coach Chris Mack, along with the ejection of a Pitt student for vulgar language, the visitors overcome icy shooting starts to both halves to complete a season sweep of the Panthers (11-6, 2-4) after winning 64-46 at home in December.

Louisville held Pitt to only six free throws in that previous meeting compared to 26 on Tuesday.

Louisville trailed 31-28 at halftime and was down the entire second half until freshman guard David Johnson hit 1 of 2 free throws with 49.5 seconds left to tie it at 61. That foul shot capped a 7-0 run after Pitt took a 61-54 lead with 2:37 to go on a banked 3-pointer by sophomore guard Trey McGowens.

McGowens had a shot to win it for the Panthers in regulation, but his 3-point try with six seconds left was off the mark.

In overtime, Johnson's layup with 4:21 left that gave the Cardinals the lead for good. Johnson finished with 11 points while junior forward Jordan Nwora had 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting after going scoreless the first 15:40 of the game. Dwyane Sutton added 13 points and nine rebounds for Louisville.

Cold shooting caused Louisville to fall behind early in both halves. The Cardinals started the game 5 of 20 from the field to trail 24-15 before making five of their next eight shots, fueling a 10-0 run to lead 28-26 with 1:46 left in the first half.

A 2-for-9 start from the field to open the second half saw Louisville go down 41-34 with 13:59 to go.

Pitt, which shot 37.5 percent from the floor, got 24 points from McGowens, but that came on 22 shot attempts. Xavier Johnson and Justin Champagnie each scored 11 points for the Panthers, and Champagnie had 11 rebounds.
