The Southeastern Conference will present another great showdown this weekend between powerhouses Ole Miss and Mississippi State. These are two of six ranked programs in the SEC, and both need wins to keep their division hopes alive.

Ole Miss’ Matt Corral is playing for a Heisman, though C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young made giant leaps last week. However, they are taking on a Bulldogs team that is 3-1 against ranked opponents this season.

The Rebels control the all-time series 54-29-4 and won last year’s meeting 31-24. This Thursday’s iteration of the rivalry will kick off inside Davis Wade Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State Preview for CFB Week 13

Ole Miss’ 9-2 record has come from a 5-2 record in conference play and a 2-2 record against top-25 teams. They have won three straight games since losing to #18 Auburn, including a 29-19 result over #11 Texas A&M.

Quarterback Matt Corral has been the catalyst for Ole Miss, totaling 3,652 yards, 29 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Three running backs are over 500 yards, with Jerrion Ealy’s 643 leading the way. Dontario Drummond is the top threat at wideout, boasting 786 yards and eight scores.

The Rebels’ defense was very inconsistent to start the season but has been tightening down as of late. With less than 20 average points allowed over their last five, they now have a D to complement their offense. Sam Williams 10.5 sacks are tied for the fifth-best mark in America, and the team is tied for sixth-most.

On the other side, Mississippi State is 7-4 with wins over #17 Auburn, #12 Kentucky, and #15 Texas A&M. They had two bad losses to Memphis and LSU in the first month but have been extremely solid since.

QB Will Rogers leads his side and is second in the NCAA with 4,113 yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The Bulldogs only have 683 total rushing yards on the season, mostly split between two backs. Makai Polk is the top target for the passing game, claiming 891 yards and nine TDs.

Mississippi State’s defense is anchored by cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, who has three interceptions and five breakups. This team has lots of talent, but because their offense scores quickly, they are on the field a lot.

Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State Prediction

If this game is anything less than a barnstormer, it will be a miracle. Mississippi State wants to light up the sky and score as quickly as possible. Ole Miss, in the same breath, wants to do much of the same with their Heisman hopeful.

Purely because their defense has been playing better lately, Ole Miss actually has a slight advantage. With that being said, expect this game to go over and over comfortably.

Take the Rebels to win and to cover, but put the majority of your money on the over.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Ole Miss is 2-2 against top-25 teams, while Mississippi State is 3-1.

2. Both quarterbacks could make a resounding impact in the Heisman race.

3. Ole Miss leads the all-time series 54-29-4.

Best Bet: Ole Miss ML (-105)

Mississippi Rebels vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Mississippi State survived with a 21-20 win over Ole Miss in an intense Egg Bowl game when Rebels kicker Luke Logan missed an extra-point attempt with four seconds left that could have tied the game Thursday night at Starkville, Miss.

After a pass-interference call, Ole Miss (4-8) had a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line with 12 seconds left. Backup quarterback Matt Corral was stopped for no gain, and defensive tackle Willie Gay Jr. then knocked down Corral's second-down pass. Corral followed with a 2-yard pass to Elijah Moore for a touchdown, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 21-20.

An unsportsmanlike penalty for excessive celebration on Moore forced Logan to try a 35-yard extra-point attempt, and the kick missed, wide right.

Ole Miss' onside kick failed, and Mississippi State ran out the clock.

Mississippi State freshman quarterback Garrett Shrader rushed for two touchdowns, and Kylin Hill rushed for 132 yards on 27 for the Bulldogs.

Mississippi State (6-6) became bowl-eligible for the 10th consecutive season. The win by the Bulldogs also ended a four-year run in which the visiting team won the rivalry game.

Ole Miss threatened on its last possession after Corral completed a 57-yard to Braylon Sanders to the Mississippi State 29 on a fourth-and-24 play. A roughing-the-passer penalty advanced the ball to the Bulldogs' 15.

On a fourth-and-4 play, Corral completed a pass in the end zone, but the play was ruled dead after a defensive offside penalty in which the defender was unabated to the quarterback. The wild sequence followed with the touchdown and failed extra point.

Mississippi State went ahead 21-14 with 3:24 left in the third quarter on a 5-yard scoring by Shrader, who started in place of senior Tommy Stevens.

In last week's game against Abilene Christian, Stevens sustained bruised ribs, and he subsequently was unable to practice. Stevens, who watched the game in street clothes, started eight games this season after transferring from Penn State.

Shrader completed 10 of 14 passes for 108 yards and rushed 12 times for 19 yards.

Corral ended up 6 of 12 for 124 yards with a touchdown and an interception while teammate John Rhys Plumlee was 9 of 14 for 121 yards. Plumlee also ran for a touchdown for Ole Miss, as did Jerrion Ealy, who gained 82 yards on 15 carries.
