Purdue vs Ball State Picks and Predictions — August 31, 2025

The Purdue Boilermakers launch the Barry Odom era on Saturday with a home matchup against the Ball State Cardinals. Both programs are in transition with new head coaches, but expectations are higher in West Lafayette after last season’s disastrous 1–11 finish.

Purdue Can Win If…

Quarterback Ryan Browne takes control of the offense and Odom’s rebuilt line gives him time. Browne briefly transferred but returned to Purdue with the promise of being the starter, and Odom believes his upside is real.

“Showed competitive spirit in the opportunities he had last year,” Odom said. “I think he’s got a big upside.”

The Boilermakers added six new offensive linemen — three from Odom’s UNLV squad and three with SEC pedigree. If this unit gels quickly, Purdue should have the firepower to handle Ball State and finally get some momentum going in 2025.

Ball State Can Win If…

Their defensive front carries over its strong preseason into live action. Mike Uremovich inherits a roster light on returning starters, but he sees promise in the rebuilt line led by transfer Nathan Voorhis.

“The defensive line is the most improved unit we have since we’ve gotten here,” Uremovich said.

Offensively, dual-threat QB Kiael Kelly gives the Cardinals an X-factor. His mobility could help offset an inexperienced line and create chunk plays against Purdue’s shaky defense.

Projected Final Score: Purdue 31, Ball State 13

Both teams are rebuilding, but Purdue has more upside at QB and in the trenches. Ball State’s new-look defense might keep things competitive early, but over four quarters, the Boilermakers’ depth and home-field advantage should carry them to a much-needed win.
