Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis takes full command in his second season leading the Scarlet Knights. He threw for 2,696 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2024 while minimizing turnovers, and he’s been named a team captain.
“Athan Kaliakmanis, our quarterback, has transferred in and has become literally the leader of our program. This is definitely his football team,” Schiano said.
With linebacker Dariel Djabome (105 tackles last year) and defensive lineman Jordan Walker anchoring the defense, Rutgers has a reliable core. If the offense sustains drives and the defense limits Ohio’s ground game, the Knights should control the opener.
Ohio Can Win If…
The Bobcats bring an experienced roster and a high-octane offense under new full-time head coach Brian Smith. Dual-threat QB Parker Navarro accounted for 31 touchdowns last season, including 18 on the ground.
Running back Sieh Bangura returns after a stint at Minnesota, having already piled up nearly 2,000 career rushing yards for Ohio. His physical running style makes him a serious threat.
“A really good back. Downhill runner. Tough runner. A guy that we’re going to have to strap it up (against),” Schiano said of Bangura.
If Navarro and Bangura set the pace, Ohio has the firepower to match Rutgers score for score.
