Without Drew Brees, The New Orleans Saints still have incredible offensive firepower. They proved this in a spectacular season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay defense had no answer for Jameis Winston, who threw for 5 touchdowns. What hasn't been talked about very much is how great the Saints' defense looked.

They forced three turnovers and limited the Packers to just three points on Sunday. Now they'll face a division rival, the Carolina Panthers.

Carolina beat the New York Jets on Sunday, and although that's not a competitive team, a win is a win. Sam Darnold played well as the starting quarterback but will face a much bigger test against the Saints.

Christian McCaffrey was the Panthers' best rusher and receiver, which is great but also concerning. In this divisional matchup, the Panthers aren't heavy underdogs, which is somewhat surprising.

New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers Preview

The New Orleans Saints look as if they're in very capable hands under Jameis Winston. After throwing for five touchdowns against Green Bay, he seems in better control than previous years.

The question is, can he stay this way? The Panthers' secondary isn't great, but if Jameis rushes his throws, he could give up the ball. The Saints seem to have a plan in place to limit how often he throws.

He only threw 20 times in their game against Green Bay, completing 14 for 148 yards. Expect the training wheels to stay on Winston against Carolina too.

The Carolina Panthers scored 16 points in the second quarter against the Jets. This, of course, was after a scoreless first quarter.

However, the Panthers only scored three points in the second half, compared to the Jets 14. This lack of offense won't do well against the Saints defense, who snagged 2 interceptions from Aaron Rodgers.

If the Panthers want to be competitive, they'll need to find a way to score on offense. Using Christian McCaffrey will help, but he can't do everything on his own. Sam Darnold should look to get the ball to his speedy wide receiver Robby Anderson.

Saints vs. Panthers Pick

Saints 34 - Panthers 17

The New Orleans Saints have a dynamic offense with a ton of weapons. We're surprised the spread is so small here, but there's a reason for that. For starters, the Saints are playing on the road.

They're also 2-5 against the spread in their previous seven against Carolina. Along with that, they're missing a lot of defensive backs, including Marshon Lattimore. Lattimore likely would've covered the speedy Robby Anderson, who can score with a single route.

This makes this game a lot closer than it would've been originally. With those defensive players out, the Saints will need to pressure Darnold often.

If they do, they can prevent him from getting any deep looks at the speedsters. The Panthers had an awful second half, which is where the Saints could really start laying it on.

Sean Payton is still one of the best offensive minds in the game, so expect many points from New Orleans.

Extra Points

1. Marshon Lattimore is out for the game against Carolina.

2. New Orleans is 8-1 in their last nine against Carolina.

3. Over the previous ten games, the total has gone OVER seven times.

Best Bet: New Orleans Saints -3.5

New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers Recap SEP 19TH 2021

Sam Darnold threw two touchdown passes and the Carolina Panthers rode a solid first half to a 26-7 victory against the visiting New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.

Carolina's defense was stingy, so the team's 17-0 halftime lead allowed the Panthers (2-0) to win at home for the second week in a row.

The Saints (1-1) managed only 128 yards of total offense on a day that several members of the coaching staff were absent due to COVID-19 protocols.

Jameis Winston of the Saints was limited to 111 yards on 11-of-22 passing with two interceptions after tossing five touchdown passes a week earlier in a rout of the Green Bay Packers.

The Saints didn't get on the board until Winston's 8-yard scramble on the second snap of the fourth quarter. That came after Darnold's fumble gave New Orleans the ball at the Carolina 18.

On their next possession, the Saints failed to pick up a first down. The Panthers sealed it on Christian McCaffrey's 11-yard touchdown run with 5:53 to play and later added Zane Gonzalez's 42-yard field goal.

Darnold completed 26 of 38 passes for 305 yards with one interception as Carolina won for only the second time in the last 10 meetings with the Saints.

The Panthers struck on their opening possession with Darnold connecting with Brandon Zylstra on a 20-yard TD.

Gonzalez, in his first game with Carolina, made it 10-0 with a 20-yard field goal.

Then with 1:55 left in the half, DJ Moore made a 2-yard TD catch from Darnold to stretch the lead.

The Saints had only 65 yards of total offense in the first half, with 31 coming on their last possession before the break. That drive ended when Winston was picked off by Juston Burris.

Even a blocked field goal that gave the Saints possession in Carolina territory in the third quarter didn't help matters. They turned the ball back over on downs after losing 2 yards on that possession.

McCaffrey finished with 72 rushing yards and 65 receiving yards. Moore posted a game-high 79 receiving yards.
