First-Place Whitecaps Begin Road Stretch With Visit to Crew

The Vancouver Whitecaps will lean on their depth and resilience as they kick off a challenging stretch of road games Saturday against the Columbus Crew.

Currently atop the MLS overall standings with 35 points, the Whitecaps (10-1-5) are facing adversity as key players, including Sebastian Berhalter and Brian White, are away on national team duty. The squad also had to overcome a bout of illness last week but still dominated the Seattle Sounders 3-0.

“I think it’s great for the players to be with their national teams, of course it is, but it doesn’t help us out right now,” Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen said. “We have to figure how we want to approach games. It could, maybe, be a little bit different from game to game.”

Whitecaps Lean on Young Talent

With a daunting run of six of their next seven regular-season matches on the road, Vancouver is counting on fresh faces to step up. Academy graduate Jeevan Badwal made an immediate impact, scoring his first career goal in his first MLS start against Seattle.

“Jeevan is a lucky player because he has a coach that actually sees his talent. He just has to show it,” Sorensen said.

The Whitecaps’ ability to stay flexible and adapt will be crucial as they navigate this stretch without several core contributors.

Crew Searching for Stability

The Columbus Crew (7-3-7, 28 points) are in the midst of a rough patch. Winless in their last six matches (0-2-4), Columbus has struggled defensively after a strong start to the season.

The Crew conceded just 14 goals over their first 14 matches but have now allowed 10 goals in their past three games, including a humbling 5-1 defeat to Inter Miami on May 31.

“I want to challenge my players to get better in this kind of moments because we attack, we attack, we attack,” Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. “And suddenly boom, boom from nowhere. And I think that this is the improvement that we need to get better at.”

Columbus Dealing With Key Absences

In addition to recent defensive lapses, the Crew are managing injuries and absences. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte (oblique) has missed three matches, midfielder Sean Zawadzki (knee) remains questionable after sitting out the past two games, and midfielder Max Arfsten is away with the U.S. national team.

All eyes will also be on Columbus midfielder Daniel Gazdag. Since being acquired from Philadelphia in April, Gazdag has yet to score or register an assist in nine appearances with the Crew.

Saturday’s matchup offers both teams an opportunity to make a statement. Bettors looking for an edge should check the latest Soccer predictions and MLS betting picks ahead of this pivotal contest.
