NYCFC Seeking a Positive Finish

NYCFC (10-8-5, 35 points) have navigated a tough July road stretch with points in three of four matches, including a 1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City last Saturday.

Andres Perea scored his first goal of the season, while Matt Freese made five saves, helping the club stay within striking distance of the top six in the Eastern Conference. NYCFC currently sit eighth, just three points back of sixth-place Orlando City.

Coach Pascal Jansen credited his staff for keeping the players prepared despite the travel grind.

“I can’t say it’s affected us more than I expected, because this is my first experience going through it,” Jansen said. “We know it’s part of MLS, so we have to deal with it. My performance staff has been preparing our players for these circumstances long before we entered this stretch. Hopefully, we’ll benefit from that and be able to perform as well as we can.”

New York has gone 1-1-1 on this trip, earning results in Charlotte, Orlando, and Kansas City. Now they’ll aim to close the trip on a high note before returning home.

FC Dallas Riding Petar Musa’s Hot Streak

Dallas (6-10-7, 25 points) is coming off its most impressive performance in weeks, a 3-0 home victory over St. Louis City that snapped a five-match winless run.

Petar Musa was the star again, assisting on Kaick da Silva Ferreira’s opening goal and then scoring twice himself in the second half. Musa now has 11 goals in league play, including seven in Dallas’ last seven fixtures.

Coach Eric Quill believes he saw the team turn a corner in their 2-2 draw at San Jose on July 16.

“Something triggered in San Jose,” Quill said. “I really started seeing a team that’s honest, a team that’s fighting for each other, communicating to each other, picking each other off the ground, clapping at each other. We have to stay humble and hungry. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but I’m proud of this team.

This team is not giving up.”

While the win over St. Louis was encouraging, Dallas still has the fewest home victories in the Western Conference (2) and is tied for the second-most home losses in MLS (7). They’ll need to improve at Toyota Stadium to climb back into the playoff race—they currently sit 12th in the West, four points below ninth-place San Jose.
