Dynamo, Galaxy Both Desperate for a Late-Season Spark

The Houston Dynamo and Los Angeles Galaxy face a must-win clash Friday night in Texas, with both clubs running out of time to salvage their 2025 MLS campaigns.

Galaxy Still Stuck at the Bottom

The Galaxy (3-14-7, 16 points) have shown some improvement after a 16-match winless start, but they remain last in the Western Conference and 13 points behind ninth-place San Jose, the cutoff for a playoff spot.

A major reason for LA’s struggles has been the long-term absence of team MVP Riqui Puig, who has yet to return from a torn ACL suffered last November. Without his creativity, the Galaxy attack has lacked rhythm and cutting edge.

Striker Christian Ramirez has been the team’s most productive scorer on a per-minute basis, but with just four goals this season (mostly as a substitute), it hasn’t been nearly enough.

Manager Greg Vanney knows his team must be smarter with its energy, especially in Houston’s summer heat.

“I think the name of the game is efficiency,” Vanney said. “You can’t go into just walking soccer. You have to change speeds at the right time. You still have to choose your moments when you’re gonna press, when you’re gonna stay together.”

The Galaxy still haven’t won on the road in 2025 and have only four more away matches to change that stat.

Dynamo Also Struggling for Form

Houston (7-11-6, 27 points) sits 11th in the Western Conference but has also been in poor form, winning just two of its last eight matches while scoring multiple goals only once in that span.

Despite the Dynamo’s slump, manager Ben Olsen warned against underestimating LA’s roster, which is still largely intact from their 2024 MLS Cup-winning team.

“It’s been difficult as of late,” Olsen said. “And it’s another opportunity against a good opponent. We can’t be fooled by where they’re at in the standings. They’re still the champs, and when you watch them, you can’t believe that they have as few points as they do.”

Houston has also lacked a true scoring threat. Ezequiel Ponce leads the Dynamo with seven goals in 22 starts, but like Ramirez, his output hasn’t been enough to lift the team.
