RSL Stand Between Galaxy and MLS’ Worst Single-Season Skid

LA Galaxy are on the brink of MLS infamy and will attempt to stave off the league’s worst-ever single-season winless streak when they host Real Salt Lake on Saturday night in Carson, Calif.

The Galaxy (0-12-4, 4 points) are now just one result away from setting a new low. A loss or draw would stretch their record to 17 matches without a win this season — the longest such run in league history within a single campaign. The current 18-match overall winless mark, held jointly by two past Colorado Rapids teams and the 2005-06 RSL squads, could fall next.

“It’s hard to change the momentum of something when it’s going in the complete wrong direction, and that’s where we’re going,” said Galaxy defender John Nelson. “But the belief is still there. The effort is still there.”

Familiar Opponent, Familiar Struggles

When these two sides met on April 5 in Utah, Salt Lake earned a comfortable 2-0 win. RSL may be struggling themselves — winless in their last six (0-3-3) — but their position is far less dire than that of LA.

Galaxy midfielder Marco Reus, who leads the team with seven goal contributions (3 goals, 4 assists), is questionable for Saturday after limping off with a leg injury midweek. Without him, LA’s already anemic attack would be even more compromised.

Real Salt Lake (4-9-3, 15 points) is also dealing with injury concerns. Captain Emeka Eneli missed Wednesday’s match at Austin with a foot injury and remains questionable. Despite conceding a stoppage-time equalizer in that game, RSL coach Pablo Mastroeni found silver linings.

“The stuff that we’ve been working on is coming to fruition,” Mastroeni said. “A lot of that has to do with the individual players really making plays.”

Diego Luna remains the key man for RSL with eight goals and four assists this season. But despite Salt Lake’s form, they’ve failed to win in their last eight trips to LA (0-4-4), making Saturday’s match a critical test for both sides.
