This is to be the 85th MLS meeting, including playoffs, between the longtime rivals. The Earthquakes have won six of the past 10 matchups, including the past two, but haven't won three straight against the Galaxy since 2005.

The Galaxy (4-2-0, 12 points) have won all three home matches this season and are 32-26-16 against the Earthquakes all-time in MLS regular-season play -- 21-8-6 all-time in games when the Galaxy are playing at home.

Striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez will look to add to his league-leading goal total of seven. He was scoreless in his team's 3-0 loss at Portland last weekend.

"Chicharito's a player that's played at the highest level, Man(chester) United, Real Madrid, to name a few," San Jose goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski said on the team's website. "He's going to bring quality, he's going to have chances, but our goal is to limit them as much as we can."

A pair of midfielders from the Galaxy will miss the match, called in by their respective national teams for duty. Sebastian Lletget is with the United States in Switzerland for an exhibition game Sunday; then he and teammate Jonathan dos Santos (Mexico) will be in Denver on June 3 for their respective CONCACAF Nations League games.

San Jose (3-4-0, 9) is on a three-game losing streak after winning three straight, and all of those losses came in the Bay Area.

On Saturday, the Earthquakes will be without midfielder Jackson Yueill, who was called up to play with the U.S. national team.

"In my day this was the rivalry," said Galaxy coach Greg Vanney, a former player for the team. "Two teams that have been around since the beginning are getting after it in sort of an old-school rivalry match.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Los Angeles FC Recap OCT 16TH 2021

A mistake from San Jose Earthquakes defender Tanner Beason gave the host LA Galaxy a victory Saturday in Carson, California, 1-0.

The own goal from Beason was the difference, along with 12 saves from Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond, who time after time turned away the Earthquakes.

The Galaxy (5-2-0, 15 points) improved to 4-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park this season, while San Jose (3-5-0, 9 points) lost its fourth straight match overall.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half, with MLS goals leader Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez missing a couple of shots on target for Los Angeles. However, the Galaxy picked it up offensively in the early moments of the second half.

Hernandez's header from the box, aimed at the middle of the goal, was saved in the 47th minute. Three minutes later, Efrain Alvarez had space in the box, but his shot with his left foot was high and wide.

Then the Galaxy lost captain Jonathan dos Santos, who was to join Mexico's national team for CONCACAF Nations League matches next week after playing on Saturday. dos Santos had to leave the game with a foot injury in the 53rd minute.

The Earthquakes also picked things up on offense in the second half. Shea Salinas and Chris Wondolowski, a pair of substitutes for San Jose in the 62nd minute, each had a shot on goal stopped by Bond.

The own goal happened in the 70th minute, with the Galaxy's Samuel Grandsir making a run to the side of the net before crossing. San Jose goalie JT Marcinkowski was in position to stop the ball, but Beason, in an effort to clear it out of bounds, deflected the ball into the net.

San Jose still had time to equalize, but Bond was up to the challenge. He kept Andy Rios from scoring in the 79th minute, then blocked a shot from Salinas followed by the rebound attempt by Judson in the 83rd minute.
