CF Montreal Begin Rebuild as They Face New England Revolution
CF Montreal may still have three months left in the MLS season, but the club has already shifted its focus to the future. They’ll open a new chapter Friday night when they visit the New England Revolution in Foxborough, Mass.

Montreal Embraces the Rebuild
Montreal (3-15-6, 15 points) sits dead last in MLS, enduring one of the league’s most difficult seasons. The club fired coach Laurent Courtois after going winless in its first five matches and didn’t earn its first home victory until June 28 — which remains their only win at Stade Saputo this year.
The team released a letter to fans this week, vowing transparency and promising a full rebuild.
“It was a good time to put out the letter because it’s good to be transparent, to show that the club is not satisfied with the results and wants to react quickly,” said captain Samuel Piette, a fixture in Montreal since 2017.
The numbers highlight the challenge. Montreal has scored just 20 goals in 24 matches (second fewest in MLS) and conceded 45 goals (second most). They’re coming off a 2-0 loss to the Chicago Fire, their ninth time being shut out this season.
Prince Owusu leads Montreal’s attack with 10 goals, while former Revolution striker Giacomo Vrioni has managed just three goals after missing six weeks due to injury.

Revolution Searching for a Spark
While New England (6-10-7, 25 points) isn’t in as dire a situation, they’ve also fallen on hard times. After a strong early-season run (6-1-4 from March to May), the Revolution are winless in their past eight matches (0-6-2).
Striker Leo Campana believes the team is close to turning things around despite the poor results.
“The results haven’t been good to us, but I know we have good potential and quality players,” Campana said. “It’s just a matter of time to get one win, and then I know things will change for us.”
Five of New England’s past six losses have been decided by just one goal, including last week’s 2-1 loss to Orlando City. Their last victory came May 31 — against Montreal, a 3-0 road win.
Coach Caleb Porter says his focus remains on improving New England’s own game model rather than dwelling on past results.
“We’ll look at their recent games, the last several games, and then focus on ourselves as well and what we need to do to improve,” Porter said. “We don’t want to lose sight of who we are, our principles of play, and our strengths.”
