They continue to build on their solid defensive structure. Under coach Rene Weiler, the team has played more compactly and limited shots on goal in recent matches. With the return of top scorer Christian Benteke (eight goals) from suspension, D.C. has more attacking options.
“We’ve played in a very compact manner, very solid. We avoid a lot of danger,” said Weiler.
If they can continue to defend well and find chances through Jackson Hopkins, who has scored both goals since Weiler’s appointment, D.C. may be able to steal points on the road.
NYCFC Can Win If…
They maintain their momentum and keep Alonso Martinez and Hannes Wolf involved in the attack. Martinez has scored six of NYCFC’s last nine goals and is in red-hot form, but Wolf (nine goals, six assists) has also been playing well.
“We’re not worried at all about that,” said NYCFC coach Pascal Jansen, addressing concerns about relying too much on Martinez.
The defense has been solid as well, and if NYCFC can limit D.C.’s chances and continue their offensive success, they should be able to take all three points.
