Toronto (4-10-5, 17 points) enters the match without Italian designated stars Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne, whose contracts were mutually terminated on Tuesday. The decision marks a pivotal shift for the Reds as they look to restructure and refocus midseason.
“The Designated Player strategy is a critical component to Toronto FC’s success in Major League Soccer and the club will continue to prioritize TFC’s short, medium and long-term strategy in the weeks ahead,” said Keith Pelly, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
Bernardeschi had tallied four goals in 15 appearances, tied for the team lead, while Insigne managed just one in 12 games. Their absence leaves a void that Toronto must fill quickly if they hope to climb the Eastern Conference standings.
New York City FC (8-7-4, 28 points), meanwhile, is looking to rebound from a 1-0 road loss to Montreal. Still, NYCFC has taken points in two of its last three matches and could rise as high as sixth place in the East with a win.
Their first meeting back in April ended in a narrow 1-0 win for NYCFC, with Alonso Martinez converting a penalty in the 64th minute. Martinez and Hannes Wolf both lead the team with eight goals each, forming a dynamic attacking duo that Toronto will need to contain.
“We have to get rid of this inconsistent behavior, and it’s been a topic throughout the season,” NYCFC coach Pascal Jansen said. “Seeing the game against Montreal shows us that we’re not quite there yet.”
As Toronto adjusts to a new era and NYCFC seeks consistency, Thursday’s matchup brings plenty of intrigue—and potential value for those diving into MLS betting predictions.
