Aggressive Earthquakes Look to Exploit Slumping Red Bulls

The San Jose Earthquakes will try to turn their high-powered attack into consistent results as they host the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night in an interconference MLS clash with playoff implications.

San Jose (7-7-6, 27 points) enters the match second in the league with 40 goals scored—yet defensive lapses have been their Achilles’ heel. The Earthquakes have allowed 32 goals, fourth-most in the Western Conference, leading to six draws where opportunities for wins slipped away.

Their latest outing, a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy, followed that pattern. It was the fourth time this season San Jose conceded a game-tying goal late in a match they led.

“I think just mentally, (we’ve) just got to be stronger to close out games,” said midfielder Beau Leroux, who has scored in back-to-back matches. “We lost focus for a little bit, but still fortunate to get a point.”

Cristian Arango leads the Quakes with 10 goals, while Josef Martinez has contributed eight tallies in under 1,000 minutes. Playmaker Cristian Espinoza continues to be among the league leaders in assists with 11.

Meanwhile, New York (8-7-5, 29 points) comes to town on a three-match winless streak (0-1-2), though they salvaged a point last weekend thanks to a 90th-minute equalizer from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in a 2-2 draw with Minnesota United.

Choupo-Moting now has 11 goals and remains in the thick of the Golden Boot race, but the Red Bulls have struggled away from home, going just 1-6-3 on the road.

“They’re very aggressive in their defensive behavior,” Red Bulls coach Sandro Schwarz said of the Earthquakes. “We have to defend very well altogether, and especially in small details.”
