Lucas Sanabria and Joseph Paintsil scored in the win over Salt Lake, while the defense recorded just its second clean sheet of the year — a big achievement for a team tied for last in MLS with 36 goals allowed.

“I think more of the pieces are starting to come together,” Vanney added.

The Galaxy hope to get standout midfielder Marco Reus back after he missed the last match with a thigh injury. Reus, along with Diego Fagundez, has three goals this season — one behind team leader Christian Ramirez.

However, Los Angeles will be chasing their first-ever win over St. Louis. The Galaxy are 0-2-3 all-time in the matchup, including a 3-0 home loss to St. Louis back on March 9.

St. Louis Showing Grit Under New Leadership

St. Louis City SC (3-9-5, 14 points) hasn’t fared much better in the standings, sitting just one spot ahead of LA in the Western Conference. But interim coach David Critchley has sparked a response since taking over.

In his debut, St. Louis defeated San Jose 2-1. The club followed that with a hard-fought 2-1 loss at Portland, where they led early before conceding the winner in stoppage time.

“I told them the performance was great, but we have to improve,” Critchley said. “… We’re playing to win every time we step on the field.”
