Coming Off Hat Trick, Joao Klauss Leads St. Louis City vs. Orlando City
St. Louis City SC interim coach David Critchley knows exactly what he wants from his top striker Joao Klauss.
“We want our No. 9 scoring goals,” Critchley said simply.

That mission was accomplished in St. Louis City’s last outing on June 15, when Klauss delivered a dazzling hat trick in a 3-3 draw against the LA Galaxy. Now, Klauss will look to build on that performance as St. Louis hosts Orlando City SC on Wednesday night.
Klauss dramatically rescued a point for St. Louis City SC with his stoppage-time equalizer, completing the first hat trick in the club’s three-year history.
“One more time, I put my name in the history of the club,” Klauss said. “Sometimes you have ups and downs in soccer. I’ve been here from Day 1 … everybody knows the relationship that I have with everybody on this club.”
Klauss has now netted five of St. Louis’ 17 total goals this season, matching his goal tally from 2023 in just 18 games. His outburst marked only the second time this year that St. Louis has scored three or more goals in a match.
Meanwhile, Orlando City SC is riding the momentum of a 1-0 road win over Colorado on June 14, which propelled them to fifth place in the Eastern Conference. However, they will be missing key players for this clash. Duncan McGuire and Alex Freeman remain sidelined with injuries, while Rodrigo Schlegel will serve a suspension due to yellow card accumulation.
Orlando coach Oscar Pareja emphasized the significance of their recent defensive improvements.
“We all declared it was a must-win, not just for the three points but also for our confidence,” Pareja said. “Our heart was good enough to win these three points and we are happy.”
This match marks Orlando’s first-ever trip to St. Louis, having claimed a narrow 2-1 win in the teams’ only previous meeting two seasons ago.
For St. Louis, securing a much-needed home win would build on the progress shown under Critchley, while Orlando aims to maintain its upward trajectory despite a shorthanded roster. The clash promises high drama as both clubs chase vital points in their respective playoff races.
