Red Bulls Aim to Continue Dominance Over Struggling Toronto

The New York Red Bulls certainly enjoy facing off against Toronto FC. In 43 all-time meetings, the Red Bulls boast a 24-9-10 record and are unbeaten in their past 12 regular-season matches against the Canadian club, going 9-0-3 in that stretch.

They’ll look to continue that trend when they visit Toronto on Wednesday.

New York (8-7-3, 27 points) has won each of the past four matches overall against Toronto and is riding a five-match unbeaten streak on the road against them. Sitting eighth in the Eastern Conference, the Red Bulls will hope this matchup helps spark their road form, as they’ve struggled away from home this season with a 1-6-2 record. That contrasts sharply with their dominant 7-1-1 mark at home.

Their lone road win came last month, a 2-0 victory at D.C. United.

“It’s always important to get the result, but it’s only because we’ve only won one game on the road,” Red Bulls coach Sandro Schwarz said. “It’s always that we feel the pressure. … It’s necessary when we want to (have) the best performance each game.”

The Red Bulls are expected to have defender Omar Valencia available after he missed the last match against Austin FC on June 14 with an injury sustained on May 31 against Atlanta United.

Toronto (3-10-4, 13 points) returns to action for the first time in nearly a month, still searching for answers after a dismal first half of the season. Sitting 14th in the Eastern Conference, the Reds are only two points off the bottom and enter Wednesday on a three-match losing streak and having lost six of their past eight.

Their last outing, a 2-0 home loss to Charlotte FC on May 31, marked yet another frustrating chapter.

“The first half of the season is over,” said Toronto coach Robin Fraser. “What happened happened, and only we can affect the second half of the season. I think the training has been really good. I feel like they’re in a good place. We know we have a big mountain to climb. But we’ve talked about it a lot during this break and I feel they’re pretty ready for it.”

Toronto will be without captain Jonathan Osorio, who suffered a lower-body injury while training with Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They also could be missing star forward Federico Bernardeschi. The Italian has missed the past two matches due to a suspension and a muscle strain, and his status remains uncertain. Bernardeschi leads Toronto with four goals and four assists in 15 matches.
