Prior to last season, the Gaels were one of just two WCC teams (Gonzaga being the other) to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Currently, Saint Mary’s leads the conference with a perfect record though they do have two games remaining against Gonzaga prior to the WCC tournament.
Highly touted freshman Aidan Mahaney (15.0 ppg) has blossomed into the Gaels’ leading scorer and leads four Saint Mary’s players in double figures. The Gaels are 18-4 overall and all four of their losses are by five points or less. One of those was a 53-48 loss to then No. 1 Houston. Their schedule might be enough to get the Gaels an at-large bid should they falter in the WCC tournament. A least one win over Gonzaga – Saint Mary’s beat the Bulldogs for the first time since 2019 last season – would go a long way in securing a tournament berth.
