Our number has Utah by 3.8. At +8.5, take Iowa State.
No. 15 Utah opened as an 11.5-point favourite at Iowa State at DraftKings and is 8.5 now. Our number is Utah by 3.8. The gap is 4.7 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Iowa State is 4-2 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 13.5 points a game across 6 games. Utah is 5-1 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 21.0 a game across 6 games. The difference is 7.5 points in Utah’s favour. Half of it is 3.75, which rounds to 3.8.
Six games a side is thin. All six Utah road games are from 2025, because Utah has played all three of its 2026 games at home. Iowa State’s sample holds one 2026 game, a 55-7 win over Bowling Green on 19 September.
Utah on the road
This is the fact against the pick, and it is a strong one. Laying 8.5 asks Utah to win by 9 or more, and it did that in 5 of its 6 road games against FBS teams in 2025.
The five were 43-10 at UCLA, 31-6 at Wyoming, 48-14 at West Virginia, 55-28 at Baylor and 31-21 at Kansas. The one that fell short was a 24-21 loss at BYU on 18 October. The method takes the average, and the average of those six is 21.0.
Iowa State at home
Iowa State’s home wins against FBS teams were 16-13 over Iowa, 39-14 over Arizona and 38-14 over Kansas in 2025, and the Bowling Green game this season. The two losses were 41-27 to BYU and 24-19 to Arizona State.
So Iowa State lost at home by 14 and by 5, and won four times by between 3 and 48. A 13.5-point home average against a 21.0 road average is where the 3.8 comes from.
2026 so far
Utah is 3-0, all at home. It beat Idaho 66-14, a team outside the FBS, Arkansas 43-10 and Utah State 33-0 on 19 September. Against FBS teams it has scored 38.0 a game and allowed 5.0.
Iowa State is 2-1. It beat Southeast Missouri State 38-10, a team outside the FBS, lost 16-13 at Iowa and then beat Bowling Green. Against FBS teams it has scored 34.0 a game and allowed 11.5. Neither team has played a Big 12 game yet.
Last season
Utah went 11-2 in 2025, won by 22.4 a game and went 5-1 on the road, ending with a 44-22 win over Nebraska at a neutral site on 31 December. Iowa State went 8-4 and won by 7.2 a game, 4-2 at home.
The two teams did not meet in 2025 or 2026.
The price
Utah opened at -11.5 and is -8.5 now, read 24 September 2026 at 04:29 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. That is a 3-point move toward Iowa State. Iowa State +8.5 is priced at -115, Utah -8.5 at -105.
The moneyline has Utah at -340 and Iowa State at +270, from -485 and +370 at the open. With the margin removed, that prices Utah to win 74.1% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has Utah at 75.8%.
Every measure here makes Utah the winner, ours included. The disagreement is 4.7 points of margin.
Pick: Iowa State +8.5
Iowa State +8.5 at -115. The gap is 4.7 points against a 3-point threshold.
It rests on 12 games, split 6 and 6. Utah’s 5-of-6 road record at this margin is the case against it.
What changes it
A line move toward Iowa State shrinks the gap. At Iowa State +7 the gap is 3.2 and the bet stands. At +6.5 it is 2.7, and the call becomes a pass.
