No. 19 Texas A&M kicks off its 2025 season against in-state challenger UTSA on Saturday in College Station, with quarterback Marcel Reed and head coach Mike Elko looking to start strong. The Aggies are hoping to erase the memory of a late-season collapse in 2024, while the Roadrunners aim to find immediate cohesion on a defense replacing all 11 starters.
Oddsmakers opened with Texas A&M as a 17.5-point favorite, the total sitting around 58.5.

Texas A&M Can Win If…
Marcel Reed continues his growth curve and executes behind a fully intact offensive line. The sophomore QB threw for 1,864 yards and 15 TDs in 2024, and head coach Mike Elko believes his progress is tangible in Year 2.
“The second time you do anything, you can do it so much better,” Elko said. “He came through all of that with a really good understanding of what it takes to be a quarterback in the SEC.”
With RB Le’Veon Moss healthy and new weapons like Kevin Concepcion and Mario Craver in the receiving corps, the Aggies should be explosive — if the secondary holds up. The defense struggled mightily against the pass last season, and this opener is a chance to prove the fix is real.
UTSA Can Win If…
The Roadrunners get another big performance from veteran QB Owen McCown and force turnovers against Reed. McCown returns after a 25-TD season and has his top rusher, Robert Henry Jr., back in the backfield. Their offense is stable — but the real concern is defense.
“I’m proud of how my team has worked in the preseason and how they prepared,” UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor said. “Now it’s time to see what that looks like on Saturday.”
UTSA’s defense is completely rebuilt with 11 new starters. For the Roadrunners to cover — or shock the Aggies — they’ll need to limit big plays and generate pressure up front without busting coverages.

Pick: Texas A&M -17.5
Projected Final Score: Texas A&M 38, UTSA 17
This is a tough draw for a completely overhauled UTSA defense. Even with their own defensive questions, the Aggies’ offensive depth and Reed’s growing maturity should be enough to control all four quarters. Look for a big day from Le’Veon Moss and a statement win from Elko’s crew.
