NYCFC Target Season Sweep as Martinez Sparks Attack vs. Low-Scoring Revs

Alonso Martinez and New York City FC look to keep their offensive momentum rolling as they aim for an early-season sweep of the New England Revolution on Saturday in Foxborough. With the Revolution still trying to awaken one of the league’s most ineffective attacks, this Eastern Conference clash is set up as a battle of scoring form vs. defensive grit.

Alonso Martinez Catching Fire for NYCFC

New York City FC (3-3-2, 11 points) have found their offensive catalyst in Alonso Martinez, who netted the winner in their March 15 win over New England and scored again in last weekend’s 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union. With five goals in seven appearances, Martinez is surging ahead of his 16-goal pace from last season.

“His mindset, his goal-setting… it’s impressive,” said NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen. “He’s working really hard every day in order to improve himself.”

NYCFC are unbeaten in their last three matches (2-0-1) and will aim to translate that form into their first road win of the season. The club is winless away from home (0-2-2) but can take confidence from its strong recent results and Martinez’s red-hot form.

Revolution Still Searching for Scoring Spark

New England (2-4-1, 7 points) may have earned a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Atlanta last weekend, but the underlying issues remain. The Revolution have scored just four goals all season — none from open play. Two have come from Carles Gil set pieces, and the other two via an own goal and penalty kick.

“We knew we had to survive a little bit in the attack,” said coach Caleb Porter, who’s been forced to rely on his defense amid limited attacking options.

There’s hope on the horizon, though. Key forwards Leo Campana and Tomas Chancalay made their returns from injury as substitutes last weekend. Chancalay, returning from ACL surgery, could be especially vital in lifting New England’s stagnant attack.
