Two Underwhelming Eastern Conference Foes Look for a Spark as Orlando City Hosts NYCFC
It is a match between two talented but frustratingly inconsistent Eastern Conference clubs, both of whom are desperate for a spark to ignite the second half of their seasons. Orlando City SC and New York City FC are coming off underwhelming weekend performances and will look to get back on track when they meet on Wednesday night in Central Florida. For two teams with playoff aspirations, this mid-week clash is a crucial opportunity to build some much-needed momentum and prove they can be the consistent contenders they believe themselves to be.
Orlando’s Frustrating Funk
For Orlando City, the frustration is mounting. The Lions are currently in the midst of a three-match winless run, and their most recent outing was a particularly galling 1-1 draw at home against the last-place team in the conference, CF Montreal. After taking a first-half lead through a Martin Ojeda goal, Orlando seemed to take their foot off the gas, allowing the visitors to control the match before a rash late challenge from defender Rodrigo Schlegel gifted Montreal a game-tying penalty kick.
The performance led to questions about the team’s focus and intensity, but head coach Oscar Pareja was quick to defend his veteran-laden group. “It’s not a decision from the players – we always play against rivals that are professionals too, and they (do) things that it makes you look like you are flat,” Pareja said this week. “It’s something that happened in the game that is organic… I think Montreal came with not many options, and they kept the ball and they make you look flat. But the boys were working.”
Pareja’s defense of his team highlights a season-long issue for Orlando: their “feast or famine” attack. Of the 40 total goals the team has scored this season, a staggering 29 have come in just eight matches. In their other contests, the offense has often looked stagnant and unable to create high-quality chances, putting immense pressure on their defense to be perfect.
NYCFC’s Woes on the Road
While Orlando is battling inconsistency, New York City FC is battling a full-blown crisis away from home. Under manager Nick Cushing, NYCFC has been a dominant force at Yankee Stadium, posting an impressive 8-3 record. On the road, however, they have been one of the worst teams in Major League Soccer. Their road record is an abysmal 1-4-4, and their offensive struggles away from home are even more shocking. In 11 away fixtures this season, NYCFC have been held scoreless a remarkable seven times.
Their over-reliance on their leading scorer, Alonso Martinez, has been a major factor. Incredibly, NYCFC has scored in only one away match all season in which Martinez himself did not find the back of the net. This statistical anomaly points to a complete lack of secondary scoring threats and a predictability that makes them easy to defend against when they are not playing on their unique, narrow home pitch. Reinforcements and Roster News
The good news for NYCFC is that their roster is finally getting healthier. Influential midfielder Keaton Parks, who has been sidelined since late May with a leg injury, has returned to training and could be available for Wednesday’s match. The club also made a move to address their attacking woes by signing attacking midfielder Nicolas Fernandez Mercau from Spain, though he is still awaiting his visa and will not be available for this contest. “Everything looked very good in training,” Cushing said this week. “Everybody was available… So, we have a few choices to make going into the next game.”
