Slumping Earthquakes and FC Dallas Look for Rebound in Rematch
Just three weeks after a fiery and dramatic first meeting, two slumping Western Conference teams will face off again, both in desperate need of a victory. The host San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas will look to get back on track when they clash on Wednesday night.
A Fiery First Meeting
When these two teams met on June 25, the Earthquakes came away with a 4-2 road victory in a chippy contest that saw FC Dallas receive two red cards. That victory, however, was the last time San Jose has tasted victory. They are currently on a three-match winless streak, including a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday.
“(It was a) poor performance and no excuses on our part,” Quakes coach Bruce Arena said. “We didn’t execute properly.”
San Jose Seeks a Spark
Despite the recent slump, there are positive signs for the Earthquakes. They welcomed defender Bruno Wilson back from a three-month injury layoff, and he immediately scored his first goal of the season. They also celebrated the news that their star playmaker, Cristian Espinoza, was named to the MLS All-Star team.
Dallas’s Offensive Woes
While San Jose is in a mini-slump, FC Dallas is mired in a much deeper one. They have won just once in their last 11 matches and have struggled badly to create scoring chances. “On the night we were pretty flat with the ball and not a lot of high-level chance creation,” manager Nico Estévez said after a 2-0 loss to LAFC on Saturday.
