Toronto FC Aiming for Fifth Straight Match Without a Loss
Toronto FC is finding small but meaningful momentum and will look to continue their unbeaten stretch when they host New York City FC on Saturday.
Toronto (1-4-4, 7 points) has not lost in its last four matches but has relied on defense and timely scoring to stay afloat. Their recent 1-0 victory at Real Salt Lake — secured by Theo Corbeanu’s early goal — snapped a string of three consecutive draws.
Toronto manager Robin Fraser pointed to the confidence boost his squad received from finally playing with a lead.
“To play from the front changes everything,” Fraser said. “It gives you a certain level of confidence and belief.”
The recent return of star attacker Lorenzo Insigne to the lineup has provided an additional spark, even though the Reds have only scored twice during their current unbeaten run. Still, Fraser’s side will look to continue tightening defensively while hoping for more breakthroughs up front.
NYCFC Still Searching for Road Form
New York City FC (3-4-2, 11 points) has struggled on the road under first-year manager Pascal Jansen. They have yet to secure an away victory in 2024, scoring in just two of five away contests.
Last weekend, NYCFC suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to the previously goal-starved New England Revolution. Jansen acknowledged the inconsistency that’s plagued the club’s youthful roster.
“Inconsistency is part of the process,” Jansen said. “We’re trying to manage that as best as we can.”
NYCFC will look to Alonso Martinez, who leads the team with five goals, to jumpstart their offense. Hannes Wolf has contributed three goals but will need help if NYCFC hopes to change its fortunes away from Yankee Stadium.
Toronto’s strong defensive organization and NYCFC’s road struggles make this an intriguing matchup for MLS Best Bets this weekend.
